Enock Kirui finished fifth overall at FSU Invitational to win the first award this season by a Trojan
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Troy University runner Enock Kirui has been named Sun Belt Conference Cross Country Runners of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
The award marks the first of the season for Kirui and the Trojans.
“I am very happy to see Enock win the Runner of the Week award,” coach Stephane Hetherington said. “I am so proud of the way he has balanced his training, schoolwork and social life. Not to mention the ongoing cultural transition he tackles every day, he deserves all the credit for this award.”
Kirui placed fifth out of a field of 114 at the Florida State Invitational on Saturday, crossing the line fifth overall and as the fourth collegiate student-athlete to finish. The Eldoret, Kenya, native was also the first runner from a non-Florida school to cross the finish line, finishing with a personal-best time of 25:03.70. The sophomore competed against the strongest field he has run against this season, and helped the Trojans to an eighth place finish.
“The level of competition at the FSU Invitational really challenged Enock and the fact that he did so well validates his talent,” Troy Director of Track and Field, Jill Lancaster said. “I am very proud of Enock's achievments this season.”
