2010-11 Schedule
TROY, Ala. - With a just over a month away from their opening game of the season, the Troy University women's basketball team will begin preparations for the 2010-11 season with a few newcomers sprinkled in with their returning players from last season.
The Trojans will have one lone senior on the roster to begin the season and that is Donette McNair (New London, Conn.), who returns as the second-leading scorer and leading rebounder from a season ago. McNair was named a Third Team All-Conference selection as she averaged 13.1 points per game and 9.6 rebounds per game (fourth in the conference). She enters her senior season with over 700 career points and 500 career rebounds.
She is joined by juniors Sarah McAppion (Canberra, Australia), Tenia Manuel (Leesburg, Fla.) and Kirsten Smith (Pensacola, Fla.) as returning players. All three saw time in the starting line-up last season, and each will be expected to fill roles this season. McAppion is coming off a career year in which she averaged nearly nine points per game; while Smith averaged 5.3 points game, and Manuel was a steady force at the forward position as she played in every contest.
Sophomore Sophie Kleeman (Newcastle, Australia) returns after playing all but one game at the point last season and was one of the team's leading scorers at over eight points per game. She also led the team in assists last season as a freshman, and was among the conference's leaders in three-point field goal percentage.
Cortney Hawkins (Birmingham, Ala.) returns for her second year and will look to give added depth to the post position as she did last year, starting two games. She will be joined by the only other returning players, Aarika Howard (Atlanta, Ga.) and Jamesha Blake (Atlanta, Ga.), who will look to add minutes and challenge for playing time.
Meanwhile, the Trojans will welcome five new faces this year with one of those all ready being familiar with the schemes as she redshirted last year. Ieva Nagy (Adelaide, Australia) will suit up for the Trojans this year after redshirting last season; she will be joined by a pair of junior college transfers Chelsey Johnson (Lexington, Ky.) and DeAngela Sword (Montgomery, Ala.), as well as a pair freshmen Dominique Ross (Covington, Tenn.) and Brooke Bowie (Winter Park, Fla.). All of those will challenge for starting jobs and provide minutes off the bench for the Trojans.
All of the players will be counted on with the tough schedule that awaits them this season.
