MIAMI, Fla. - After suffering their worst defeat of the season and playing their fourth game in eight days, the Troy University women's basketball team took advantage of a day off on Thursday to rejuvenate themselves for a spirited practice session at US Century Bank Arena Friday morning.
Troy (8-5, 1-3 Sun Belt) has lost their last three Sun Belt Conference games and finds themselves three games behind co-leaders Middle Tennessee and South Alabama in the early East Division race. The Trojans will look to keep pace, and get back on track in the conference, as they take on FIU (6-10, 2-3 Sun Belt) Saturday evening at 5 pm (EST).
The Trojans enter the game after their worst defeat of the season, in which they fell to Florida Atlantic 83-60 in Bcoa Raton on Wednesday; after falling behind by as many as 33 in the first half.
Troy is led by junior Donette McNair, who has come off the bench in the last two games, by averaging 12.5 points per game game and 8.9 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, senior Alyce Shearing is averaging 10.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, while also being the top 3-point shooter in the Sun Belt Conference. Senior Brittnie Davis is the only other Trojan in double figures at 10.3 points per game, while freshman Sophie Kleeman and sophomore Sarah McAppion are close to double figures thus far this season.
Meanwhile, FIU is led by Rakia Rdogers at 15.5 points per game, although she has only played in four games. Of the players who have played most of the season, Elisa Carey averages 12.1 points and 9.8 rebounds per game; while Michelle Gonzalez averages 11.1 points per game while shooting 76.6 (36-of-47) percent from the free throw line. Monika Bosilj averages 10.8 points per game, while Marquita Adley averages 10.3 points and 10.1 rebounds per game - off the bench.
The Trojans and FIU are tied 5-all in the series, with the Trojans winning the last three in the series. However, the Trojans trail in all-time series at US Century Bank Arena 4-1. In last season's game in Miami, the Trojans escaped with a 62-61 victory led by Alyce Shearing with 21 points per game.
The game can be heard on WTBF-94.7 FM, beginning at 4:45 pm (EST) with the pre-game show; followed by the tip-off at 5:00 pm (EST).
