Trojans Hit Road To Carolina

TROY, Ala. - The Troy University indoor track and field team hits the road early Thursday morning, heading to Chapel Hill (NC) for the Dick Taylor Carolina Classic beginning Friday morning and hosted by the University of North Carolina.
We are delighted to head into our second competition this weekend," Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Jill Lancaster said. "It will be a good competition at a great facility on the North Carolina campus. We had a great weekend with a lot of marks set, and with a large number of newcomers we are looking to build on first meet and move up in the Sun Belt rankings.
It will be the second meet in as many weeks for the Trojans, who are coming off a 12 medal performance at the Blue Raider Invitational hosted by Middle Tennessee. This weekend's meet marks the second of three meets to prepare the Trojans for the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at the end of February.
"After opening our first indoor meet with one school record and (multiple) all-time top five records we as a staff are extremely excited about this weekend," Troy assistant track and field/throws coach Chip Brundage said. "With leadership in the throws - Tiphanie Baker coming off school record toss last weekend and Brynn Forsyth not far behind in the weight - we are looking forward to a good weekend in those competitions. With an entry limit we will be experimenting with some new distance which should show well for a young Trojan team with great leadership out of our veterans. The hurdlers opened up very well last week, and we expect great things off the fast mondo track at North Carolina."
Senior Tiphanie Baker will look to continue the momentum she created last week with a school record performance. The senior claimed a silver and bronze medal in the weight throw and shot put respectively. Although she was the only multi-medal winner for the Trojans, several other Trojans were able to shine in the first meet of the season.
Freshman Ja-Courteny Alexander recorded finishes of fifth (55 meters) and fourth (200 meters) in her first collegiate race, while Brynn Forsyth finished third (weight throw) and fourth (shot put) in her first collegiate meet. The 4x400-meter relay team won the gold medal, giving the Trojans one on the weekend, when they crossed the line in a time of 3:59.81. Simone Pugh will also be looking to contend this weekend as she finished ahead of Alexander in the 55 meters at the Blue Raider Invitational.
The pentathlon kicks off the competition at 11 am; which will be followed by a host of events, led by the women's weight throw at 4 pm and concluding with the 3000-meter run at 7:40 pm on Friday evening.
The meet will continue onto Saturday, as it will begin at 11:45 am and conclude with the 4x400-meter relay at 3:35 pm on the campus of the University of North Carolina.
