Trojans and Warhawks Battle Wednesday
1/26/2010 5:30:00 PM | Basketball (W)
TROY, Ala. - The Troy University women's basketball team returns to the court Wednesday night looking to end a three-game losing streak, hosting ULM at Trojan Arena.
Troy (10-8, 3-6 Sun Belt) is mired in their longest losing streak since last January in which they lost four games; however, the Trojans have lost the last two games by a combined 10 points. After falling to South Alabama by 13 on the road, the Trojans lost to WKU by seven at home and, most recently, dropped a three-point decision to Louisiana-Lafayette on the road Saturday.
A bright spot for the Trojans over the last two games - WKU and Louisiana-Lafayette - has been the play of fifth-year senior guard Brittnie Davis. The Montgomery-native scored 52 points over the course of the week, including a career-high 29 points against WKU. In that same game against the Lady Toppers, Davis shut down one of WKU's leading scorers in Kenzie Rich and held her to no points from the floor - finishing the game with two (from the free throw line).
Davis and freshman Sophie Kleeman tried to get the Trojans back into the contest against Louisiana-Lafayette, combining for 39 points (Davis - 23, Kleeman - 16). The Trojans had a chance to tie the game on their final possession with 11 seconds remaining, but were unable to get a good look at a 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded inside Earl K. Long Gymnasium.
Of the six conference losses this season, the Trojans have lost four by a combined 14 points - including a two-point decision to their next opponent, ULM (8-12, 2-8).
The Trojans fell 69-67 ULM on the road in late December, after falling behind by as many as 15 points in the second half. The Trojans had a look at the winning basket, but a 3-pointer rimmed out at the buzzer. Donette McNair led the Trojans in that contest with 17 points and five rebounds, while Alyce Shearing added 16 - all in the first half. Meanwhile, Davis chipped in 12, Sarah McAppion 10 and Kleeman 10 in the loss.
This will be the ninth meeting between the two teams, with ULM leading the series 6-2; including winning the last two.
The game will tip at 7 pm inside the friendly confines of Trojan Arena, with the pregame show beginning at 6:45 pm on WTBF-94.7 FM with Buddy Johnson and Ben Stanfield providing all the action as the Trojans gear up for the run to Hot Springs and the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
