TROY, Ala. - The Troy University women's tennis team will take on their second consecutive ranked opponent when they hit the courts Wednesday at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center in Clemson where they will battle the 14th-ranked Tigers.
"We're excited about the opportunity to play a really good Clemson squad," Troy assistant coach Tyler Faulkner said. "It will be indoors in a controlled environment so I expect us to come out and play well. This will be another great test for our team."
Troy (1-1) enters the match off a 5-2 loss to FIU over the weekend, a match in which the Trojans were able to capture two singles victories. Freshman Lauren Simpsonimproved to a perfect 2-0 on the season, with a straight-set 6-4, 6-3 victory over FIU's Mariana Muci; while teammate Stephanie Vieira moved up to number four and improved to 2-0 on the season with a hard-fought 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 victory over FIU's Maria Spencely.
Although those were the highlights from the match against 32nd-ranked FIU, the Trojans had several in their season-opening match against Florida Gulf Coast on the way to a 4-3 victory. The Trojans dropped just 15 games in their three singles victories in the opener. Freshman Karoline Grymelwon her first match at number one 6-1, 6-0; which coupled with Simpson (number two) and Vieira (number five) gave the Trojans the victory. Troy was able to secure the victory with the doubles point, which they garnered by winning two of three doubles matches.
The match on Wednesday will be a little tougher than the first two matches of the season for the Trojans as Clemson enters the match with a 2-0 record. The Tigers have finished the last seven seasons ranked inside the top-20, and have been to two Final Fours under current head coach Nancy Harris - who previously coached nearby AUM to three national titles.
The match is set to begin at 2:30 pm in Clemson. Fans can follow the live coverage of the match by clicking on the link above. Results will be posted at the conclusion of the meet when they become available.
