Troy Falls To FIU On Hardcourts

MIAMI, Fla. - A day after winning their season-opening match on the road, the Troy University women's tennis team ran into their fourth nationally-ranked team this season. The Trojans fell behind early, before falling to 32nd-ranked FIU 5-2.
"We came out flat in doubles," Troy assistant tennis coach Tyler Faulkner said. "But we really picked it up in singles. The girls competed hard at all six spots, but FIU had a little more experience than we did. Lauren and Stephanie both had great weekends for us."
In doubles play, the Trojans dropped all three of their doubles matches to give the point to FIU (2-0). At number one, the team of Liset Brito and Maria Vallasciani defeated the Troy team of Karoline Grymel and Leonie Guijt 8-1; while at number two the team of Mariana Muci and Maria Spencely defeated the team of Emma Smith and Lauren Simpson 8-5. Meanwhile, at number three the team of Christine Seredni and Priscilla Castillo defeated the Troy team of Stephanie Vieira and Rosaura Ramirez-Vega 8-2.
In singles play, Troy (1-1) was able to pick up a pair of victories, at number two and number four. Lauren Simpson picked up a victory at number two singles with a straight-set 6-4, 6-3 victory over Mariana Muci. Meanwhile, Stephanie Vieira improved to 2-0 on the season in singles play as she picked up a hard-fought 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 victory over FIU's Maria Spenceley.
The Trojans return to action next week against nationally-ranked Clemson on the road.
