Trojans Claim Victory In Season Opener

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Troy University women's tennis team claimed a hard-fought 4-3 road victory over Florida Gulf Coast University when Stephanie Vieira clinched the match at number five.
In doubles, the Trojans team of Vieira and Rosaura Ramirez-Vega defeated Morgan Bechtel and partner Melissa Narzissenfeld 8-3 on court three. Following thematch on three, FGCU's number one doubles team of Jessica Sweeting and Katharine Evans pulled out a thrilling 9-7 win against Karoline Grymel and Leonie Guijt, tying up the doubles competition. With all eyes on the number two match, the pairing of Emma Smith and Lauren Simpson defeated the FGCU team Eva Sambrano and Bibiana Almeida 8-6, giving the doubles point to Troy.
Starting singles up 1-0, the Trojans saw FGCU rally back to bring the score to 3-2 with only Bechtel and Evans left on court. Evans lost a tough match to Vieira 6-2, 6-4, clinching the match for Troy.
"We're happy to come away with a win," Troy assistant coach Tyler Faulkner said. Their team was fired up to play at home and we were dealing with some first match jitters. FGCU really tested us, which should really help us against FIU tomorrow."
The Trojans return to action Saturday afternoon against FIU in Miami.
