MOBILE, Ala. - The Troy University women's basketball team was unable to overcome a fast start by in-state rival South Alabama, falling to the Lady Jags 81-68 in Sun Belt Conference action at the Mitchell Center Saturday night.
South Alabama (12-6, 7-0 Sun Belt) scored the first points of the game on 3-pointer from Morriah Smith, and proceeded to hit six more in the first half to run to a 44-25 halftime advantage.

Troy (10-6, 3-4 Sun Belt) found themselves down by as many as 24 in the second half, but continued to battle the entire second half eventually pulling within 11 near the end of the contest.
“I am proud of the girls' effort tonight,” Troy head coach Michael Murphy said. “They showed poise and grit in being able to come back in the second half the way they did. We just ran into a buzzsaw in the first 10 minutes of the game.”
Donette McNair led the Trojans with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor and 4-of-5 from the free throw line; pacing three other players in double figures. Sarah McAppion came off the bench to add 12 points on 5-of-13 shooting from the floor, while Brittnie Davis and Sophie Kleeman 10 each in the loss.
The Trojans shot 45.5 (25-of-55) percent from the floor and 41.2 (7-of-17) percent from beyond the arc.
South Alabama was led by Christian Shelter with a game-high 30 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the floor, and 6-of-12 from beyond the arc. Tashley Gaines added 14 points in 22 minutes for the Lady Jags.
The Lady Jags shot 42.6 (26-of-61) percent from the floor and 37 (10-of-27) percent from beyond the arc.
The first five minutes of the contest dictated the remainder of the game as South Alabama ran to 15-4 lead, which proved to be the final margin of victory. The second half belonged to the Trojans as they outscored South Alabama 43-37.
Troy returns to action Wednesday night as they host WKU at Trojan Arena, with pregame beginning at 6:45 pm on WTBF-94.7 FM.
