TROY, Ala. - The Troy University soccer team shattered four different records in their 15-0 victory over Alabama State Sunday afternoon at the Troy Soccer Complex.
The Trojans broke four single-game records including goals, assists, points
and shots. The Trojans totaled 54 shots, 10
assists, 15 goals and 40 points against the Hornets in the victory.
Three of those records broken were set in 2001 against South Carolina State, while the shots record was set in 2007 against the same Alabama State program.
All but five Trojans scored in the big victory over the Hornets. Megan Bonfield, Nicole Targa, Bridget Duke and Carley Zurfluh recorded two goals a piece for Troy and posted 21 of the 54 shots.
Bonfield and Zurfluh scored back-to-back goals late in the second half to wrap up the match.
Freshman Katie Wellborn registered two assists and a goal for the Trojans, while Laura Hopson added one goal and two assists for the day.
Troy's freshmen got their fair share of playing time as they accounted for two goals and five assists. Ashley Hoke posted her first goal of the year in the 39th minute and finished with five shots. Jacqi O'Shea recorded two assists and Alyssa Rochester also earned an assist.
Sophomore Mandy Miley topped
the shot list with nine and junior Katie Cooper followed with seven shots
but only Miley was able to find the back of the net.
For the first time this
season the Trojans did not allow a shot and for the effort goalkeeper Ashley Branham received
her second shutout of the season. Senior Katie Kolb replaced her in the second
half and competed the flawless contest.
Head Coach Chris Bentley said he was glad to get the win and is going to focus on their upcoming SEC matchup.
"We have a lot to prepare for Friday to get ready for a tough Mississippi State side," Bentley said.
The Trojans continue play on Friday when they hit the road to Starkville, Mississippi to take on the Bulldogs under the lights at 7 pm.
