TROY, Ala.
- The Troy Trojan women's soccer team gave up an early goal to Lipscomb, before succumbing to the Bison 1-0 in a downpour at the Trojan Soccer Complex.
Troy (3-1) dropped their first match of the season after Lipscomb
(2-1) defeated them as the rain consistently
poured on the field throughout the match.
The Bison scored the only goal of the sodden match just two and half minutes into the game, as Kate Spellman went to the far post, pushing the ball past goalkeeper Ashley Branham. The goal caused the Trojans to be in a tough fight of catch-up until the end of the regulation time.
Head coach Chris Bentley said that his team went out lethargic and could not respond to the lone Bison goal.
"Lipscomb came out hard and with a goal early, and we weren't able to get the opportunity to convert," Bentley said.
The rain picked back up in the second half as the action started, forcing the score to linger for a mud-ridden remainder of action.
The Trojan defense took charge in the second half of play as they shortened the playing field to keep the ball in Lipscomb court for a majority of the half. They also took away the Bison shot opportunities as they allowed only two shots to sneak past them.
"We did a good job in
keeping the ball in their half trying to create opportunities," Bentley said. "Unfortunately we
were unable to get on the end of them."
The Trojans recorded seven shots on the day as freshman Niki Stamaris led Troy with two shots and five others recorded a shot a piece. Branham registered nine saves for the Trojans.
The Trojans are set to face in-state rival Alabama State Sunday at 1 pm at the Troy Soccer Complex.
