Trojans Fall to Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. - The Troy University soccer team had never lost to Arkansas State and had never started the conference season by winning their first two games of season entering Sunday's match-up with the Red Wolves. Unfortunately, the Trojans came up on the short end of the score Sunday against a much-improved Arkansas State team, falling 3-0.
Arkansas State (5-4-1, 2-0 Sun Belt), which upset South Alabama on Friday afternoon, jumped ahead of the Trojans early in the first half by scoring two goals 32 minutes into the match.
The Red Wolves' first goal came off the foot of Tory Pitts when she took a ball from Ashley McMurtry, hitting a shot from just outside the box in the 24th minute for a 1-0 lead. They added to the lead just eight minutes later when Kara Nitti took a ball from McMurty, and headed it past Troy goalkeeper Ashley Branham to the right side of the net for a 2-0 lead.
Arkansas State netted the third goal in the first half as Tracy Powell struck with just 19 seconds remaining in the opening half. She took a ball from Chelsea Fricke and Nitti and hammered a ball into the box where several players were, and the ball hit off a Trojan defender and found the back of the net for the final goal of the game.
The Trojans were able to get 15 shots off on Arkansas State, with eight of those being on goal. However, Arkansas State goalkeeper Susan Brown was able to record eight saves in 90 minutes of action. Jill Pinder led the way for Troy with six total shots, while Ceil Martinec
Troy (5-4-1, 1-1 Sun Belt) has to play with 10 players for the final six minutes of the match as Megan Bonfield was sent off with a red card.
The Trojans return to the pitch this Friday at home against Middle Tennessee. The match is part of a doubleheader weekend for the Trojans, who will entertain WKU on Sunday.
