TROY – Mary Morris inched a game-winning goal past a diving MTSU defender in the fifth minute of overtime to give Troy a 1-0 win over the Blue Raiders on Friday afternoon in Sun Belt action.
Troy (6-4-1, 2-1 SBC) was out-shot by the Blue Raiders 17-3 for the game, but the Trojans made it count in extra-time.
The Trojans waited until overtime to earn their first corner kick and senior Bridget Duke put the ball in the box where after a short struggle for possession Morris was able to guide it into the net for the victory.
The goal was Morris' fourth of the season and her ninth of her career.
“We did some good things defensively in staying organized and finding the corners,” head coach Chris Bentley said. “MTSU is a quality team and they gave us a lot of problems on defense but we were able to stay organized and succeed.”
“We played hard for 90-plus minutes and came away with a win in overtime which is always good. We are glad to get the win, but we have to be ready to bounce back on Sunday against a tough WKU squad.”
Ashley Branham turned in the clean sheet for Troy recording 10 saves for the match. Her counterpart for MTSU, Rebecca Cushing, had two saves while allowing the lone goal.
The Blue Raiders (8-2-1, 2-1 SBC) were led offensively by Shan Jones who totaled five shots, including three on goal. Jaimee Cooper added four shots in the losing effort.
The victory is the first-ever for the Trojans over Middle Tennessee. Troy had been 0-5-1 previously against MTSU.
Sunday's match with the Lady Toppers will start at 1 pm. Admission to all home soccer matches is free.
