THIBODAUX, La. - The Trojans wrapped up their weekend trip to the state of Louisiana by defeating Nicholls State 3-2 in double overtime Sunday afternoon. With the victory, Troy has stretched its unbeaten streak to six matches dating back to last season.
Troy (3-0), who has never lost to the Colonels, was able to
overcome two deficits before ending the match with a golden goal in the second overtime period.
"We came out lethargic and made silly errors," head coach Chris Bentley said. "Nicholls played with great intensity and they gave it everything they had. They were able to capitalize on our mistakes, but fortunately we came out on top."
A scoreless
10-minute overtime led to the golden goal opportunity, and Troy capitalized junior transfer
April Madden headed in a rebound from a Niki Stamaris shot to give the win.
After a 0-0 standstill in the opening half, Troy fell behind early in the second when Nicholls State's (1-2) Kaity Mattsson found the back of the net just 30 seconds in. The goal was set up by a cross from Carolyn Noble before Mattson chipped it over the head of Troy keeper Ashley Branham.
Troy's Bridget Duke responded to the Nicholls State score when a handball in the box was called on Nicholls State. The infraction caused a penalty kick, one in which Duke hammered home the equalizer in the 57th minute, for her second goal of the season.
The Trojans found themselves behind for the second time of the match after a Keisha Brown header found the foot of Carolyn Noble to give Nicholls State a 2-1 lead in the 78th minute.
Troy again battled back to score the equalizing goal when junior Jill Pinder scored with just six minutes remaining in the match. Her goal gave her three so far this year.
Pinder's match-tying
goal was set up by the freshman Stamaris and sophomore Mandy Miley.
