FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Junior Leander McKenzie advanced to the semifinals in the 110-meter hurdles with his performance in the preliminary round on Thursday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
McKenzie, competing in his first national championship meet, finished fifth in his heat but his time was good enough to push him through to the semifinals of the event. The semifinals are scheduled for 7:05 pm Friday night.
The junior ran a time of 14.13 seconds, which qualified him 17th out of 18 possible runners that could advance to the next round.
"Leo made it through the hard way," Troy Director of Track & Field/Cross Country, Jill Lancaster said. "He came out really aggressive and got hung up on the first hurdle. It took him a few hurdles to get back into the race, but he was able to and able to push through. Being his first national meet, he held his composure and now just needs to get ready for Friday. That race should be easier on his nerves after getting his first race in."
Meanwhile, junior Tiphanie Baker saw her season end with her performance at the NCAA National Championship meet. She finished 28th overall in the discus with a throw of 41.01 meters (134'6").
