Former Troy University standout Sherrod Martin joined a growing list of former Trojans to hear their name called on NFL Draft day. Martin was taken in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft, with the 59th selection overall, by the Carolina Panthers.
Martin, a native of Griffin, Ga., joins other recent Troy University draft selections Leodis McKelvin (1st round in 2008), Brannon Condren (4th round in 2007), DeMarcus Ware (1st round in 2005) and Osi Umenyiora (2nd round in 2003).
Martin, who played in the Senior Bowl in January and participated in the NFL Scouting Combine in March, recorded 94 tackles during his senior season as a safety for the Trojans. He recorded four interceptions and had 11 pass breakups during the year. He is projected to be a cornerback in the NFL.
He was the first player from a Sun Belt Conference school to be taken in the draft, marking the third time in the last four years the Trojans have had a player with that distinction.
With the NFL Draft continuing through seven rounds, there is a possibility of other Trojans having their name called before the event ends on Sunday afternoon. Stay tuned to TroyTrojans.com for the latest from the NFL Draft.
