TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Troy University track and field program will head south to participate in the 30th annual FSU Relays beginning on Thursday and running through Saturday. The event is hosted by Florida State University, and will be held in conjunction with the FSU High School Relays beginning this season.
Troy will enter the weekend after another strong outing at the Georgia Relays last weekend. The Trojans brought home nine medals from the meet to run their total to 30 in just two meets, and qualified two athletes in field events for the NCAA Regionals later this season.
Agata Cichoszewska met a NCAA qualifying mark in the triple jump with a distance of 12.76 meters to qualify in her first outdoor meet of the season, while junior Tiphanie Baker qualified in the discus with a throw of 52.28 meters en route to winning her third gold medal in just two outdoor meets.
The Trojans will look to travel with a full squad this weekend after much adjusting to last weekend's meet with several student-athletes having to opt out at the last minute due to illness.
Chontia Allen and Cichoszewska will start their competition a day earlier than all of the other female athletes, competing in the Heptathlon beginning on Thursday morning. The duo will compete in the 100-meter Hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200-meters on Thursday; before returning to the track on Friday to finish the grueling event with the long jump, javelin and 800-meters.
Mike Conley, Leander McKenzie and Grant Bullington will also be competing a day earlier than most athletes as they take part in the Decathlon, beginning with the 100-meters, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400-meters on Thursday. The three student-athletes will hit the track again on Friday to finish the event with the 110-meter Hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500-meters.
After a day's rest, several of those same athletes will be competing in individual events; beginning with Cichoszewska in the triple jump at 10 am on Saturday morning. She will be joined on Saturday by Allen in the high jump at 12 noon, Bullington and Conley in the pole vault at 12 noon, along with McKenzie and Conley in the 110-meter hurdles at 11:50 am.
Several Trojans will debut in their events this weekend with senior Lamar Hicks looking to improve upon his silver medal finish in the 100-meters at the Sun Belt Conference Championships last season. He will be in the event, along with teammates Burke Leonce and Antonio McLeod on Saturday afternoon. The trio will also team with Payton McGhee and Matavis Madden in the 4x100-meter dash earlier on Saturday to try and qualify for the NCAA Regionals.
