NEW ORLEANS ? For the second-straight week, Troy's Brandon Hazzard is the Sun Belt Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, according to a vote by the league's 13 member institutions. He is the first player to receive the award twice this season and first to earn the honor in back-to-back weeks since FAU's DeAndre Rice during the 2006-07 campaign.
“He is really shooting the ball well. The part that is so great is that he is letting the shots come to him and not forcing them. Because of that, he is shooting at a really high percentage. That is because he is not taking any bad shots. I am awfully proud of him and our program. Getting this award twice is an honor for him and the team,” head coach Don Maestri said.
Hazzard led the Trojans to another pair of victories this past week, as Troy improved to 15-10 overall, 10-3 in league play and extended its Sun Belt-best active win streak to eight games. The Trojans topped Arkansas State, 85-77, before going on to defeat Florida Atlantic, 78-63. Hazzard continued his excellent play from the guard position to the tune of 22.0 points per game for the week, shooting a staggering 57 percent from the field and 60 percent from three-point range.
Hazzard's highlight game of the week came on Saturday at Florida Atlantic, where he went for a career-high 30 points, propelling the Trojans' second-half comeback. The Atlanta native shot 73 percent (11-15) from the field, 80 percent (4-5) from long distance and was perfect (4-4) at the line.
Hazzard has scored in double-figures in 20-of-25 games this season, including Troy's last 12 contests. The Trojans leading scorer is averaging 15 points a game this season ? 20.0 during the current win streak ? while shooting an impressive 47 percent from the floor.
The Trojans are in action next on Thursday when they host rival Middle Tennessee at 7 pm at Trojan Arena.
