Trojans Sixth After Day One

JONESBORO, Ark. - The Troy University women's track and field program finds itself in sixth place after the opening day of the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships held on the campus of Arkansas State University.
The events on Friday featured preliminary rounds in the sprint and middle distance competitions, as well as finals in the field competitions and distance competitions.
On the track, Ariel Cavazos missed the cut for the finals in the 55-meter dash, finishing with a time of 7.45 seconds - the 16th fastest time in the event. She was just 0.14 seconds away from making the finals in the event. Meanwhile, Shay Matthews finished 19th with a time of 7.55 seconds.
In the 800-meter run, Erika Fyrvall finished 11th with a time of 2:20.23, less than two seconds behind the third place finisher; Patricia Gumbs of Florida Atlantic. Brentley Collins finished 21st in the same event with a time of 2:40.84.
In the distance competition, Anastacia Limo finished 17th in the 3000-meter run with a time of 11:39.89.
Latoya Ragland continued to impress on the track in the indoor season in the 55-meter hurdles. Entering the meet with the third-fastest time in the conference, she promptly ran a time of 8.01 seconds which was the second-fastest time of the day. The time trailed only Lauren Wiggins of North Texas' time of 7.96 seconds in the preliminaries.
The final track event of the day that was scored for the Trojans was the Distance Medley Relay in which the team of Kelly Harrington, Cavazos, Fyrvall and Jenean Corcoran finished sixth with a time of 13:02.20.
In the field events, Kapri Hockaday narrowly missed out on a medal in the high jump by clearing a height of 1.63 meters (5'4.25"). She finished fourth behind ULM's Heather Davis (1.79 meters), Amy Bowman of Arkansas State (1.71 meters) and Lesly Hale of Arkansas State (1.71 meters) in the event. Troy's Chontia Allen finished 15th overall in the event with a height of 1.48 meters (4'10.25").
In the long jump competition, senior Agata Cichoszewska narrowly missed out ona medal as she finished fourth with a distance of 5.74 meters (18'10"). She finished behind WKU's Sharika Smith (6.02 meters), Middle Tennessee's Sarah Nambawa (5.96 meters) and WKU's Samantha Smith (5.83 meters). Ragland finished 12th in the long jump with a distance of 5.56 meters (18'3"), while teammate Cavazos finished 13th with a distance of 5.50 meters (18'00.50'). Matthews finished 22nd with a jump of 5.06 meters (16'7.25"), while Naquita Rowe finished 27th with a distance of 4.79 meters (15'8.75").
Junior Tiphanie Baker finished sixth in the shot put for the Trojans with a throw of 13.51 meters (44'4"), while Monique Jordan finished 15th overall with a throw of 11.54 meters (37'10.50").
Freshman Nicole Polk, who owns the school record in the pole vault, could not clear a height in her first-ever competition in a conference championship.
