TROY ? The two hottest teams in the Sun Belt Conference will wage war on Saturday night at Trojan Arena when the Troy Trojans host Western Kentucky University at 7:30 pm in men's basketball action.
Troy (16-10, 11-3 SBC) has won nine straight games, and 11-of-12. The Hilltoppers (17-7, 11-2 SBC) are winners of four consecutive games and stand just one-half game ahead of the Trojans in the SBC East Division standings.
For the second straight game, Troy will not only have the streak on their minds, they will also be in the mood for revenge. The two teams met on New Year's Day in Bowling Green, with WKU defeating Troy 99-76 and Orlando Mendez-Valdez recording the first known triple-double in the Hilltoppers' illustrious basketball history.
The Trojans own just one victory in program history over WKU, a 27-point defeat at Trojan Arena in 2006. The game was Troy's first-ever Sun Belt home game, since then the Hilltoppers have won six straight against Troy.
Troy's Brandon Hazzard has been named the Sun Belt Player of the Week two weeks in a row and he showed why on Thursday night against Middle Tennessee. The junior from Atlanta scored 21 points, including hitting 10-of-12 free throws, leading the Trojans to a 70-64 victory. He leads the team with a 15.5 points per game average this season.
Western Kentucky University is led offensively by A.J. Slaughter. The guard scores 15.9 ppg, while four teammates average at least nine points per game. Mendez-Valdez leads the Sun Belt in 3-pointers made with 67.
Saturday's game will be played after the women's game. Barry McKnight and Jerry Miller will bring you all the action from courtside on the Troy ISP Network. The game will also be available locally on WSFA Weather Plus in Montgomery, My TV 4 in Dothan and WRJM in Troy. To find those stations in your area, contact your local cable provider.
