TROY - Troy University Assistant Soccer coach Claire Scanlan was honored this week for her outstanding accomplishments with the Irish women's national team.
Scanlan along with three other former players were recognized for their part in raising the interest in the sport in Ireland.
"To be able to play for your country is an honor in itself and for the FAI to acknowledge my career on such a grand scale is an incredible tribute, one I shall always treasure," Scanlan said.
Scanlan played in almost 60 games for the Irish team in the European and World Cup qualifying games. She was also named Player of the Year in 1999. She attended the Mercyhurst College in Pennsylvania from 1992-1995 on scholarship where her love of the sport grew stronger.
Her love for the sport inspired her to strive to the best of her ability. In doing so she played with the Japanese club OKI and later she spent time at Leeds and Bristol Academy. Her Irish career has continued hand in hand with coaching, leading the Irish under 23s and assistant to the under 17s.
"What an amazing experience for her. Being modest is an understatement for Claire when it comes to her playing career. This really shows how much of an impact she has made to the game of soccer for her country and beyond. I truly believe that she will do that much more for the game as a coach. We are extremely fortunate to have her as a part of this University," Troy head coach Chris Bentley said.
