WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - With the final qualifying stage of the PGA Tour Q School underway at Bear Lakes Country Club, two former Trojans are trying to earn their PGA Tour cards.
Ben Bates, a 1984 graduate of Troy, and Josh Broadaway, a 2000 graduate, each advanced to the final stage with strong showings two weeks ago at the second qualifying stage.
The final qualifying event, which began on Wednesday and will conclude on Monday, is a six round, 108-hole event, with the final three rounds being shown live on the Golf Channel.
The 170 participants at Bear Lakes are fighting for 25 PGA Tour cards. Also, the next 50 (approximate) finishers will earn fully-exempt status on the Nationwide Tour.
Through two rounds, Broadaway has turned in some good scores and currently sits tied for eighth place. He posted 2-under par 70 in the first round and a 3-under 69 in the second round on Thursday. Broadaway currently sits three strokes behind the leader.
Bates hasn't seen quite the same success, posting scores of 74 and 75 in the first two rounds. His 5-over par score has him currently tied for 111th. Fortunately for Bates, the six round event allows for players to overcome tough early rounds and climb up the leaderboard during the weekend.
Air times for the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds are as follows on the Golf Channel:
Sat., December 5 - 12:00-3:00 p.m.
Sun., December 6 - 12:00-3:00 p.m.
Mon., December 7 - 11:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
