Trojans Fall in Championship Game

ATLANTA - The Troy Trojans had their three-game winning streak snapped in the championship game of the 2009 Georgia State Thanksgiving Tournament, as they fell to the host Panthers 61-45 Saturday night.
Donette McNair, who earned All-Tournamentr honors, led Troy with 13 points and six rebounds on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor. Kirsten Smith added 12 and Alyce Shearing nine in the loss.
The Trojans shot 35.7 (15-of-42) percent from the floor and 21.4 (3-of-14) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 75 (12-of-16) percent from the free throw line.
Troy (3-2) tied the contest at 17-17 with 11:32 remaining in the half before Georgia State went on a 23-0 run over the next 10 minutes to take a commanding 40-17 lead. The Trojans were able to end the run when Cortney Hawkins drained a pair of free throws with just 90 seconds remaining in the first half, trimming the score to 40-19.
Neither team could not muster a basket over the last 90 seconds as each had an opportunity.
The Trojans held the lead in the first three minutes of action as they took a 7-4 lead when Shearing connected on a 3-pointer with 17:16 to play in the opening half.
After falling behind by three, at 10-7, with 16:33 to play in the first half, the Trojans were able to hang around when Sarah McAppion took an inbounds pass from Sophie Kleeman for an easy basket, and McNair hit a jumper to tie the score at 17-17.
Danyiell McKeller led Georgia State with 18 points, while Chan Harris added 10.
Georgia State (3-1), winners of back-to-back games for the first time this season shot 45.5 (25-of-55) percent from the floor and 50 (4-of-8) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 77.8 (7-of-9) from the free throw line.
The Trojans are off for a week before they return to action next Saturday against Belhaven College at Trojan Arena. The game will be the first of three consecutive games at Trojan Arena, and will tip at 2 pm. The game can be heard on WTBF-94.7 FM.
