ATLANTA, Ga. - The Troy University women's basketball team will put their modest two-game winning streak on the line against Morgan State in the first game of the Georgia State Thanksgiving Tournament Friday afternoon.
"Morgan State is going to be the most athletic team that we have played this season," head coach Michael Murphy said. "They are even more athletic than the Auburn team we took on in the season opener."
Troy (2-1) enters the contest fresh off a 74-57 victory over Longwood University on Tuesday night at Trojan Arena. The game was played after the Trojans had a week off following their victory over Jacksonville State.
The Trojans are led in scoring by Alyce Shearing and Donette McNair, at 13.7 points per game, while McNair is averaging a double-double through the first three games of the season. Senior Brittnie Davis and freshman Sophie Kleeman are both averaging in double figures as well for the Trojans.
McNair has led Troy in the last two games scoring, pouring in 17 at Jacksonville State (along with 16 rebounds) and 21 against Longwood (along with nine rebounds). Shearing added a career-high five 3-pointers against Longwood, while Kleeman scored a career-high 13 points off the bench in the victory over Tuesday night.
The Trojans will be taking on a Morgan State (2-2) team that split games at the Seton Hall Tournament last week in New Jersey, winning just their second game all-time against a Big East opponent when they upended the host team. The Lady Bears are led by Corin Adams, who is averaging 21 points per game and is just 14 points away from becoming the school's all-time scoring leader.
Troy will turn to their defensive pressure they have used through the first three games to try and slow down the Morgan State offensive attack. The Trojans are holding opponents to less than 16 percent shooting from beyond the arc, and have not allowed an opponent to shoot more than 16.7 percent from beyond the arc this season.
The game is set to tip at 3 pm (CST) at the GSU Sports Arena, and is the second game of a doubleheader. The game can be heard on WTBF's website until the conclusion of the Iron Bowl, at which time the game will be switched to the radio.
