TROY, Ala. - The Troy women's basketball team returns to action for the first time in a week when they hit the floor Tuesday night against Longwood (Va.) University.
Not only will be the Trojans be in action for the first time in a week, but they will be in action for the first time in front of the home crowd as they play inside Trojan Arena. Tip is set for 7 pm and can be heard on WTBF-970 AM.
Although the Trojans haven't played in a week, the seven days off has been beneficial for the team in the early portion of the schedule.
“We are excited to be home,” Troy head coach Michael Murphy said. “We haven't played in a week which was good for us to be able to rest some people that are hurt. It gave us a chance to get well.”
Troy (1-1) is coming off a 62-54 come-from-behind victory over Jacksonville State, in which the Trojans trailed by as many as 12 and by nine at half.
“I thought we did a good job in the second half against Jacksonville State last week,” Murphy said. “We had some players who stepped up when we needed them to, especially Donette McNair. That helped down the stretch. We have to have that from everyone is we expect to have success the rest of the season.”
McNair paced the Trojans' offensive attack with her first double-double of the season and the seventh of her career, scoring 17 points and grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds. The rebounding total bested her previous career total of 16 set last season against Jacksonville State and matched against South Alabama. She also recorded three blocked shots, moving her into third all-time on the blocked shots list with 31 career blocks.
Alyce Shearing added 13 points, while Brittnie Davis added 10 and freshman Sophie Kleeman added nine points in her first career start - playing all 40 minutes.
The game with Longwood (1-3) will be the first meeting between the two schools, with the Lancers making the move from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I. The Lancers are coming into the game splitting their last two games, defeated Utah Valley State at home, before falling to Kennesaw State on Tuesday.
“Every game presents a new opportunity and presents new challenges,” Murphy said. “Longwood is very athletic, and they have good shooters on their team. They have some shooters that walk into the gym, and once they walk through the doors think that is a good shot. We cannot afford to lose sight of their shooters, and we have to know where they are at all times.
They are the kind of team that will run a lot of things at you offensively. We have to be defensively sound and stay fundamentally sound on defense to give ourselves a chance.”
The Trojans will play Longwood at Trojan Arena, then hit the road for two games at the Georgia State Thanksgiving Tournament.
“I hope we have a good crowd at the game,” Murphy said. “Although it is the holidays, I hope people will come out to the game, since we are playing at home for the first time. It is the start of a busy week for us as we will play three games in five days.”
Tip is set for 7 p.m. at Trojan Arena, with the pregame show beginning at 6:45 pm on WTBF-970 AM.
