TROY, Ala. - One week after hosting their own fall tennis tournament, the Troy women's team will head south to Jacksonville, Florida for their second fall tournament this season. The Trojans will be playing in the tough UNF Fall Invitational beginning Friday on the campus of the University of North Florida.
The tournament will feature teams from UAB, Bethune-Cookman, Central Florida, Coastal Carolina, Florida Gulf Coast, Georgia Southern, Indiana, Jacksonville, North Florida, Samford and USC Upstate.
Troy has three of its top players in the 32-person draw for the Women's 'A' Flight, including having two players seeded for the tournament. Karoline Grymel, fresh off of playing the 92nd player in the world in the main draw of the USTA Tennis Classic of Troy, is seeded second in the draw and has a bye to the Round of 16. She will await the winner of the opening round match between Indiana's Evgeniya Vertesheva and Ali Beavers from Georgia Southern.
Freshman Lauren Simpson is also seeded in the 'A' Draw for the Trojans, drawing the fourth seed and she appears in the bottom half of the draw with Grymel. Much like her teammate, Simpson draws a bye into the Round of 16 where she will face the winner of the match that features Samford's Madelie Janse Van Rensburg and Michaela Bunea of Coastal Carolina.
The only other player in the 'A' Draw for the Trojans is freshman Kelly Irving who is in the top half of the draw. After making it through to the semifinals in her first collegiate tournament last weekend, Irving is unseeded this weekend and will face Eve Castaing of Jacksonville in the opening round - another participant from the Troy Invitational last weekend.
In the Women's 'B' Draw, the Trojans have three players listed including top-seeded Rosaura Ramirez-Vega who will earn a bye to the Round of 16. There she will await the winner in the battle of Birmingham as Samford's Stephanie Parkison and UAB's Jenny Cape will face-off in the opening round. Leonie Guijt is also in the top half of the draw with Ramirez-Vega and will face USC-Upstate's Sofia Camberos in the opening round. Guijt would not face a seeded opponent until the quarterfinal round if she wins her first two matches, as she is in the draw with third-seeded Giorgia Romeo of UAB. Also in the Women's 'B' Draw is Stephanie Vieira who is in the bottom half of the draw for the Trojans. She will face off against Jacksonville's Iva Jaresova, and just like Guijt would not face a seeded player until the quarterfinal round as she is in the draw with fourth-seeded Kristin Lewis of Samford.
The Women's 'C' Draw features two Trojans, as Gabriella Veiga and Emma Smith are listed in the bracket. Veiga will play Coastal Carolina's Kim Webb in the opening round, with the winner advancing to the Round of 16 to face the winner of Andrea Paez of Bethune-Cookman and Melissa Narzissenfeld of Florida Gulf Coast. Meanwhile, Smith received a bye in the opening round and will face the winner of Indiana's Maria Guerreiro and Georgia Southern's Natalie Maffett in the Round of 16.
Meanwhile in doubles play, the Trojans team of Karoline Grymel and Leonie Guijt were seeded fourth in the Women's 'A' Draw and will face the team of Cinthya Lazaro and Emilia Milovanovic of USC-Upstate in the Round of 16. The Trojans have only one other team in the main draw of doubles play as freshmen Kelly Irving and Lauren Simpson will play unseeded, and will face the team of Ali Beavers and Natalie Maffett of Georgia Southern in the Round of 16.
In the Women's 'B' Draw of doubles play, the team of Rosaura Ramirez-Vega and Stephanie Vieira earned the second seed in the tournament and draw a bye to the Round of 16; where they will face the winner of the match between Samford (Jessica Diamon/Beth Erwin) and Florida Gulf Coast (Morgan Bechtel/Jen Evans). The Trojans also have Emma Smith and Gabriella Veiga as an unseeded team in the Women's 'B' Draw, and they will the face the team of Olga Makhova and Angie Torres of Charleston Southern. The winner of that match advances to the Round of 16 to face the team of Maria Camberos and Kim Webb of Coastal Carolina.
