TROY, Ala. - The WKU Lady Toppers used an overtime goal to defeat Troy University 1-0 in Sun Belt Conference action Sunday afternoon.
It took only 43 seconds of extra time for WKU (8-3-1, 3-1 SBC) to find the back of the net, knocking off the host team.
A pass by Kellie Walker set up a Nikki Workman shot as it was hammered to the left side of the goal post and snuck behind Ashley Branham to give the Lady Toppers the win. Workman's goal gave WKU its first overtime win in three tries this season.
The closest Troy came to scoring a goal came in the first six minutes of action when Bridget Duke's shot went just high of the goal and marking the first shot of the day.
During the standstill of regulation time, the Lady Toppers managed to fire off 19 shots to Troy's five. The Trojans goalkeeper, Ashley Branham, recorded 11 saves on the day.
The extra time on Sunday marked Troy's sixth overtime match this season, three of them being at home. Five of those matches have come in the past seven matches played.
Branham maintained over 184 scoreless minutes this weekend against MTSU and WKU, but unfortunately was unable to pick up her fourth shutout of the season.
Duke topped the short shot list as she accounted for two, both just soaring high off the goal. Jill Pinder, Nicole Targa and Jacqi O'Shea each added a shot.
Troy coach Chris Bentley was proud of his team's performance Sunday afternoon.
"I think we had a solid performance defensively," Bentley said. "Unfortunately, we were on the wrong end of a very good goal in overtime."
The Trojans go back into action Friday, as they head west to take on Denver for a 6 pm matchup, and continue on to match with North Texas on Sunday.
