The Troy University men's golf team posted a final round score of 296 on Tuesday in the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate Tournament to finish in a three-way tie for eighth place in the 15-team event.
The Tojans finished the two-day, 54-hole event with a team score of 883, 19 over par, tied with Jacksonville and Florida Gulf Coast one shot behind Kennesaw State. East Carolina ran away with the tournament crown, posting a 12-under par team score of 852, 19 shots better than Wofford in second place.
Trojans coach Matt Terry said his team did some good things in its third tournament of the fall, but left room for more improvement.
“We got better this week by hitting a lot of fairways and greens, but we didn't putt well enough to put ourselves in contention,” Terry said.
The Trojans tied for third with 169 pars in the tournament but had just 34 birdies and no eagles. ECU led the tournament with 52 birdies and shot a collective 25-under par on the par fives at the Savannah Quarters Country Club in Pooler, Ga. The course is a Greg Norman designed, par 72 track that played 7,016 yards.
Junior Chase Whitehead (Eufaula, Ala.) led the Trojans in the tournament with a two-under par 214 (72-69-73) to finish in a tie for seventh place individually. David Watkins of ECU top top individual honors, posting a score of 11-under par 205 for the event to win by six strokes.
“Chase played well, but he had a chance to do even better today,” Terry said. “We played the back side of the course first, and that is the harder side. He was two-under for his round at the turn, but played the front side, which was the easier side, in three over.
“The rest of the team had the same problem today. We were even at the turn, but eight over on the second nine, which was the front side of the course.”
Junior Reid Merritt (Slocomb, Ala.) also played well for the Trojans, finishing tied for 17th with an overall score of two-over par 218 (73-71-74). Merritt tied for the tournament lead in par three scoring with a two-under par total.
Both Merritt and Whitehead finished tied for fourth with 39 pars in the tournament, but neither cracked the top 15 in birdies.
Another junior, Zach Portemont (Andalusia, Ala.), who was playing in his first event this fall, finished tied for 36th with an eight-over par score of 224.
Juniors Ricky Casko (Cartersville, Ga.) and Hunter Harper (Bessemer, Ala.) rounded out the Troy squad in the event. Casko finished tied for 57th (77-73-79=229) while Harper finished tied for 79th (83-82-77=242).
The Trojans will take two weeks off before returning for their fourth, and final, tournament of the fall November 2-3 at the Renaissance Invitational, hosted by Xavier University, in Ft. Myers, Fla.
