The Troy University men's golf team will return to action on Monday in the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate Tournament.
Trojans coach Matt Terry is shaking up his lineup for this tournament and is looking for better results than the team has produced in its first two events this fall.
“We have got to be much more efficient on fairways and greens and we have to be much smarter when putting,” Terry said. “They have been making far too many mental mistakes and judgements errors and those are things that we can clean up.”
The tournament will be played at the Savannah Quarters Country Club in Pooler, Ga. The course is a Greg Norman designed, par 72 track that will be set up to play 7,016 yards.
The event will feature the host team from Georgia Southern as well as teams from Armstrong Atlantic State, East Carolina, Elon College, Florida Gulf Coast, Furman, Georgia College & State, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Old Dominion, Samford, Winthrop and Wofford.
“Georgia Southern will be the team to beat, but I expect that East Carolina and Furman will also be challengers to win this tournament,” Terry said. “I am going to be interested to see how our players respond to the things we have been doing here to get better, and how the two guys who will be playing for the first time respond.”
The Troy squad will be made up of five juniors – Reid Merritt, Zach Portemont, Hunter Harper, Ricky Casko and Chase Whitehead. It will be the first event of the year for Portemont and Harper.
“The big thing is we have to find a way to grind through when things are going sideways,” Terry said. “That is not something we have been able to do, but we have to fight through.”
The team will travel on Saturday before playing a practice round on Sunday. The tournament is scheduled to begin with 36 holes of play on Monday beginning at 8 a.m. (ET). The final round will be played on Tuesday with play starting at 8 a.m. (ET).
