Doubles Play Leads Trojans in Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Troy University women's tennis team played their second tournament of the fall this past weekend, participating in the UNF Fall Invitational over a three-day period.
The Trojans relied on the play on the play of their doubles teams to garner attention in this weekend's tournament, as two of the teams made it to the quarterfinals or better.
In the 'A' Draw for doubles, the team comprised of freshmen Lauren Simpson and Kelly Irving made it all the way through to the finals as an unseeded team. After receiving a bye in the first round, the duo dispatched of Georgia Southern's team of Ali Beavers and Natalie Maffett 9-8 (5) in the Round of 16 to earn a date against the top-seed in the quarterfinal round.
In the quarterfinals, Irving and Simpson pulled the upset over the top-seeded team from North Florida (Aline Berkenbrock and Raquel Castro), 9-8, to move into the semifinal round against the third-seeded team from Indiana (Lindsey Stuckey and Katya Zapadalova); whom they defeated 8-6 to move into the championship match. After pulling to upsets, Irving and Simpson ran out of juice; falling to the second-seeded team from Indiana (Leslie Hureau and Myriam Sopel), 8-0.
The only other doubles team in the Women's 'A' Draw for the Trojans was the fourth-seeded team of Karoline Grymel and Leonie Guijt. The duo won their first match of the tournament in the Round of 16 over the team of Cinthya Lazaro and Emilia Milovanovic (USC Upstate), 8-1. In their quarterfinal match, the duo defeated te team of Ashley Hungerford and Kristi Kegerreis (Georgia Southern), 8-2, before falling to te eventual tournament champions in the semifinals.
In the Women's 'B' Draw of doubles, the second-seeded team of Rosaura Ramirez-Vega and Stephanie Vieira made it all the way to the semifinals before falling in the tournament. After receiving a bye in the opening round, the duo defeated the team of Jessica Diamond and Beth Erwin (Samford) in the Round of 16, 8-2. They advanced to the quarterfinals with the victory, where they defeated the team of Jessica Fuller and Melanie Rolle (North Florida), before falling to the eventual champions from Samford (Madelie Janse Van Rensburg and Stephanie Parkison).
The tournament was not as kind to the Trojans on the singles side of the draw, as only three players made it to the quarterfinals or beyond in three different draws.
In the Women's 'A' Draw, the Trojans had three players entered with just two making it to the Round of 16. Meanwhile, in the 'B' Draw, top-seeded Rosaura Ramirez-Vega won her opening match (Round of 16) over Samford's Stephanie Parkison 6-1, 6-4; before falling to unseeded Lindsey Stuckey of Indiana 6-0, 7-5 in the quarterfinals. In the same draw, unseeded Leonie Guijt won her opening two matches before falling to third-seeded Giorgia Romeo of UAB 6-3, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.
Emma Smith advanced to the semifinal round in the 'C' Draw for the Trojans, winning two matches before falling to College of Charleston's Maria Camberos 7-6, 3-6, 10-2. Meanwhile, after losing her first match in the 'A' Draw, second-seeded Karoline Grymel advanced to the championship match of the Consolation Bracket where the match went unplayed due to travel. She was able to win three matches to advance to the championship of the bracket.
