The win also marks the first time the Trojans have ever defeated the Privateers, and it snapped New Orleans' eight match winning streak.
"This is the biggest win in our program's history," said head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick, "I couldn't be more proud of our team for winning three matches in three days."
Troy (9-10, 5-3) was led on the day by Devin Von Pingel who posted 13 kills to go with four blocks. Meghan Gilroy was also in double digit kills with 10. Megan Henderson set up the Trojan attack with 40 assists.
Defensively, Lizzie Clough paced the Trojans with 19 digs. Kayla Giles and Brittany McClelland each posted nine digs. McClelland also had a team high four blocks.
"We've been close to a signature win all season," Kirkpatrick said, "and today was the day that we got it."
The Trojans had to come from behind in the first set, Troy trailed late, 18-14. They used a three point run to get within one at 18-17. Down by two at 19-17, the Trojans used three more points to pull ahead, 20-19. The two sides tied at 20, 21, 22 and 23 before Troy took two straight to clinch the set, 25-23.
The Trojans used a late run to take control of the second set. After the two sides found themselves tied on nine different occasions, the Trojans used five straight points to go from down 18-17 to up 22-18. Three Von Pingel kills fueled the late set run. Troy went on to take a 24-19 lead.
At 24-19, UNO (12-6, 5-1) head coach Jozsef Foreman received a red card for coming onto the court, awarding a point and the set to the Trojans.
The third set was a much different story, this time with the Privateers using a late set run to take control. The two sides were close throughout, but with the Privateers ahead 18-15, they scored seven straight to take the set, 25-15.
The Trojans bounced back to take the fourth set and the match. The Trojans slowly built a 12-9 lead, but they used a four point run to pull ahead by seven at 16-9. The Privateers slowly chipped away but could never pull even, and the Trojans took the fourth set, 25-22.
"I'd like to say a special thanks to our fans and the Sound of the South, without them we wouldn't be in the position we're in," said Kirkpatrick.
New Orleans was led by Lindsey Loyd who posted 14 kills. Vesna Jelic and Edina Dobi each posted 10 kills. Cassidy Asebroek posted 29 assists. Defensively, Nicky Valenti posted 18 digs and Jelic had 10.
"We'll enjoy this win, but we'll be back to work and we'll be ready for Wednesday," Kirkpatrick said.
The Trojans will be back in action on Wednesday when they make up a match against Samford. First serve against the Bulldogs is set for 7 p.m. at Trojan Arena. Check back with TroyTrojans.com for more new and notes from the volleyball court, as well as all of Troy Athletics.
