Trojans Continue Hot Streak

TROY - The Trojans continued their hot streak with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-22) sweep of Samford on Wednesday at Trojan Arena. The win gives the Trojans four straight overall and six straight at home.
"It's a great feeling to have six straight at home," said head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick, "it's nice to reach all of the goals that we've set."
Troy was led offensively on the day by Meghan Gilroy who posted 12 kills and a .292 attack percentage. Megan Henderson set up the Trojan offense all night, posting 32 assists. Defensively, Kayla Giles and Henderson each posted 10 digs.
"We played very well defensively, and that led direfctly to our offense," Kirkpatrick said, "we did a nice job serving aggresively and taking them out of what they wanted to do."The first set was a very close one, with the two sides finding themselves tied on 11 occasions. The Bulldogs jumped out to the early lead, taking four of the first five, to go ahead 4-1. The Trojans battled back to know things up at 7-7. The Trojans used a five point run to pull ahead, but Samford answered later with a four point run to take their own lead.
The two sides got back even with each other at 19-19, and then tied at every point through 24-24, at which time the Trojans used two points, capped off by a Devin Von Pingel killed, to take the first set, 26-24.
The second set was close early, with Troy holding a slim 7-6 lead. At that time, the Trojans scored three straight to go ahead 10-6. Trailing 16-12, the Bulldogs battled back and tied things up at 16-16. The two sides remained tied until 18-18, that is when the Trojans took seven of eight and the set, 25-19.
The third set was much of the same, with the two sides being close throughout, and the Trojans using a late run to take control. The two sides were tied on ten different occasions, the latest being at 21-21. Troy took four of five at the end of the set to clinch the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-0.
Samford was led on the night by Allie Bettinger and Sheriden Stangohr who each posted 12 kills. Casey Garvey posted 33 assists for the Bulldogs. Defensively, Alexis Bauer led the Bulldogs with 13 digs.
"We're looking forward to the weekend and trying to break our road losing streak," said Kirkpatrick.
"Once again thanks to our fans and Sound of the South for all of their support," Kirkpatrick said.
