DENTON, Texas - The Troy University women's basketball looks to end a four-game losing streak, heading west to face their fourth consecutive Sun Belt Conference Western Division opponent, the University of North Texas on Wednesday night.
Troy (8-11, 3-6 Sun Belt) will not only be battling the Mean Green, but they will also be battling Mother Nature as she wreaks havoc along the central part of the United States. The winter storm has all ready shut down the North Texas campus on Tuesday as a precautionary measure, while the team is scheduled to fly in Dallas Tuesday night in preparations for the upcoming contest. As of Tuesday morning, the game will go on as scheduled as there are no delays to, or from DFW.
The Trojans are in the midst of a four-game streak, just a week after having a five-game winning streak. They have lost two games by eight points or less, leading for 35 of the 40 minutes of action. During the streak, senior Kylie Morrissy had her streak of 20-point games stopped and sophomore Donette McNair recorded a double-double and narrowly missed on two more. Also during the streak, the Trojans have fallen into a tie for 10th place overall in the conference, just a half-game back of North Texas (7-12, 3-5 Sun Belt) for ninth place and just one game back of eighth-place New Orleans. The Trojans are just two games out of jumping all the way to third place in the conference heading into tonight's contest.
The Trojans trail the all-time series to North Texas, 6-1, splitting the two meetings last season with Troy winning the game at Trojan Arena. The Trojans are 0-4 at The Super Pit, the venue for Wednesday night's game, all-time and fell 75-50 in the last meeting between the two teams.
North Texas is led by Amber Jackson, averaging 16.8 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. They enter Wednesday night after a week off from their last game, a victory over FIU on the road. The Mean Green have alternated wins and losses in their previous three games, however, before that were losers of six consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Troy enters the contest led by Morrissy averaging 17 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. McNair is the only other player in double figures for the Trojans, averaging 11.9 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. Junior post Alyce Shearing is averaging 6.7 points and 3.6 rebounds per game to compliment the two forwards. Meanwhile, senior Larelle Roper, who is fourth all-time at Troy in career assists with 379, is just 17 short or entering the Sun Belt Conference Top 25 all-time in the same category.
Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. Wednesday night at The Super Pit, with all the play-by-play action on WTBF-94.7 FM with Travis Jarome bringing you all the play-by-play action.
