MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Troy University track and field team will open the 2009 indoor season at the Blue Raider Invitational, hosted by Middle Tennessee on Saturday at the Murphy Center.
The event begins at 11 am on Saturday morning, and is a one-day event concluding with the last event beginning at 4:40 pm. The meet will start with field events, with the first running event beginning at 2 pm (one mile run).
The meet is the first of three indoor meets that will lead up to the Sun Belt Conference Championship Meet in Jonesboro, Ark. on February 28 and March 1. This weekend's meet is the same site in which the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships were held, meaning that the returning student-athletes will have experience in the setting.
Participating teams include the host Middle Tennessee, Belmont (TN), Jacksonville State (AL), Milligan (TN), Tennessee State (men only), Western Kentucky and Troy.
The Trojans return nine student-athletes from last season's team, and return three others from two seasons ago to compete this season in the Sun Belt Conference indoor season. Junior Tiphanie Baker, senior Monique Jordan and senior Agata Cichoszewska will look to lead the Trojans in the field events; while returning distance runners Jenean Corcoran and Kelly Harrington will look to lead the Trojans in the running events this weekend.
Other athletes competing for the Trojans will include Chontia Allen (four events), Ariel Cavazos (four events), Brentley Collins (two events), Erika Fyrvall (two events), Kapri Hockaday (three events), Lauren Howell, Anastasia Limo (three events), Shay Matthews (four events), Brittney McGhee (two events), Jasmine Patton, Nicole Polk, Latoya Ragland (four events), Naquita Rowe (four events) and Stephanie Yawn (two events).
A pair of athletes enter the weekend holding the school record in their respective events. Cichoszewska is the recordholder in the triple jump with a distance of 12.46 meters. Meanwhile, Baker holds a pair of school records in events she will compete in this weekend. Baker is the school record holder in the shot put with a distance of 13.32 meters, and in the weight throw with a distance of 16.71 meters. Ironically, all three records were set during the 2008 indoor season.
Meanwhile, several current Trojans are among the top four spots in their respective events heading into the 2009 season.
On the track, Corcoran is third in a pair of events (one of which she will compete in this weekend), the 3000-meters with a time of 10:50.98 and in the 5000-meters with a time of 19:23.70. Harrington is fourth in a pair of events, including the one-mile run with a time of 5:25.00 and in the 3000-meters with a time of 11:06.87.
Meanwhile, in field events, Cichoszewska is fourth in the long jump all-time at Troy with a distance of 5.58 meters; while Jordan is fourth all-time in the weight throw with a distance of 15.46 meters.
Results will be posted as they become available on Saturday.
