TROY - It took eight games, but the Troy Trojans were finally dealt their first loss of the season, falling 2-1 to North Florida on Friday.
A combined 30 fouls and four cards (all to UNF) were handed out during the match that saw Troy (5-1-2) once again fall behind at halftime.
The Osprey (3-3-1) started the scoring late in the first half on a Elena Luzins goal off a rebounded Ashley Branham save in the 38th minute.
The Trojans answered back quickly after the start of the second period, with Mary Morris connecting for her fifth goal of the season off a Jenny Smith set-up to tie things at 1-1.
Troy would be unable to surge ahead, before Kristin Rhodes was able to bang home the game-winning goal for UNF off another rebound in the eighth minute of overtime.
"Soccer is weird. Its a funny game. You can have hte better play and not come out on top. I think we did have some good opportunities, but give [UNF] credit. They were able to pull the ball out and work their butt's off out there and finish us off," head coach Chris Bentley said.
"We are shooting ourselves in the foot and we just couldn't pull it off this time. Hopefully they can use this as a learning experience and get better."
Branham finished the game with five saves. While UNF goalkeeper Erica Lippitt recorded two saves.
The Trojans will be back in action on Sunday when they host Louisiana Tech at 3 pm in the final game of the inaugural Troy Trojans Soccer Classic. At noon on Sunday UNF will face Alabama A&M to begin day two action.
