FROM THE PITCH
August 18, 2008
Now that school has started the girls are settling into a more normal schedule of one practice a day in combination with classes.
Over this past week we have been playing longer length 7v7 scrimmages to get up our game fitness and put into action the tactics that we have been working on. The whole week was leading up to a mock regular season game weekend so that we could get the feel of how a typical week would go during the season. On Friday, in the blistering heat we had a 90 minute 7v7 intersquad scrimmage. For some reason our legs seemed to be heavy and the play was considerably slower than the level that we had been training at.
At halftime we all motivated each other to start putting higher pressure and winning tackles in order to pick up the intensity of the game and, for the most part, in the second half play was much better. The yellow team came out victorious after the 90 minutes of play, but Coach decided to throw a curve ball at us and tell us that there was a ten minute sudden death overtime. If the yellow team won then the red team would have to do 100 pushups and 250 sit-ups and if the red team won then each team would have to do 50 pushups and 125 sit-ups since yellow had already won the game during regulation time.
The yellow team once again came out on top winning the entire scrimmage. On Saturday we had a recovery practice at 8 am which involved an hour of classroom tactics dealing with set pieces (including a pop quiz over the tactics we had already gone over). Since the field was soggy from a rainstorm, we opted out on going through the set pieces on the field and just ran a slow 40 minute recovery jog.
On Sunday, we put on our new
After signing autographs for a couple hours we went back to the locker room to change into our training gear and get ready for our 11v11 scrimmage at 4 pm.
The first half was dominated by the starters but the reserve team was able to capitalize on a counter attack leaving the game 1-1 at halftime. During the shorter, 30 minute second half, the starters were able to pull ahead ending the game at 4-1. It was nice to be able to play almost a full field match against different people and everyone seemed to come out of the game with enthusiasm about next weekend's upcoming first game. We now have Monday off to let our legs recover and then we will be back into the grind at 6 am on Tuesday for our first day of weights.
Hopefully the next time I write we will be 1-0....GO TROJANS!
