Troy University men's basketball coach Don Maestri has seen and done a lot of things in his 27 season on the bench for the Trojans.
He'll add something new to the list when his Trojans open the 2008-09 season. Troy will host intra-state rival UAB at Trojan Arena on Saturday, November 15. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools in men's hoops and will also be the first of two meetings between the schools during the 08-09 campaign.
“We're very happy to have UAB on the schedule this year for a home-and-home series,” Maestri said. “We are hopeful that this will be the start of an annual series where we will play each other once a year, with alternating home games.”
The Blazers, who are expected to be a preseason top 20 team under Mike Davis, will host Troy on Saturday, December 20, in the back end of the home-and-home this season.
In addition to the games with UAB, the Trojans will also play a home-and-home series with UNC-Wilmington from the Colonial Athletic Association. The Seahawks were 20-13 last year in their first season under coach Benny Moss. UNCW will come to Troy on Dec. 22 after hosting the Trojans on Nov. 17.
Other non-conference games for the Trojans this fall include home games against Georgia State and William Carey College and road games against Dayton and Jacksonville. The Trojans will also take part in a round-robin tournament at LSU over consecutive weekends in November. Troy will face Centenary, Alcorn State and Northwestern State before closing the event on Nov. 30 against the host Tigers.
Troy will open Sun Belt Conference play on December 11 at Middle Tennessee. The first home league game will be on Thursday, December 18, against Florida Atlantic. The Trojans will also host FIU, UL-Lafayette, New Orleans, Denver, Arkansas State, MTSU, Western Kentucky and South Alabama in league play.
“We will have a lot of new faces on the team this year and this schedule will certainly provide for plenty of challenges,” Maestri said. “Facing UAB and UNCW in back-to-back games to open the season means that we had better be ready to play from the very start.”
The 2009 Sun Belt Conference Tournament is scheduled for March 7-10 in Hot Springs, Ark.
