Trojans Take Series from South Alabama

TROY, Ala.- The Troy Trojans finished out the 2008 regular season with a series win over South Alabama as the Trojans won 6-5 Saturday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field.

“This is a great way to end our regular season,” coach Bobby Pierce said. “It started great with our senior ceremony. Out pitching was not great but good enough for us to be in the game and Bryan Miller had another solid game at the plate.”

The Jags (31-24, 15-15) got the game started with two runs in the top of the first inning. Clint Toomey singled to center and scored on a Ryan Bohanan single down the right field line. Bohanan later scored on a bases loaded walk to put South Alabama up, 2-0.

USA added another run in the top of the second on a Toomey double scoring Ray Kruml, who also reached on a double.

The Trojans (32-24, 18-12) finally pushed a run across in the third when freshman Adam Bryant led off with an infield single. He advanced to third on Bryan Miller's double down the left field line. Michael Precise grounded into a double play but picked up the RBI for the 3-1 USA lead.

Beau Brooks led off the Troy fourth inning with a single through the right side. Brett Henry followed with a double just inside the third base line. Trevor Tyre flew out to center for the sacrifice fly to plate Brooks. Charley Williams singled to right to score Henry to bring the score to 3-3.

Troy took its first lead of the day in the fifth inning when Bryant singled up the middle and Steven Felix drew a walk. Both runners would touch the plate in Miller's 12^th home run of the season. He hit a ball over the fence in left center to give the Trojans the 6-3 advantage.

South made things interesting in the top of the seventh with two runs on two hit to close the gap to 6-5.

Senior Rob Brown made his final start at Riddle-Pace Field and did not factor in the decision as he went an inning and a third and gave up three runs on five hits while walking three and striking out two.

Freshman Drew Hull (5-0) was the beneficiary of the Trojan scoring inning in the fifth. He went three and two thirds innings and gave up only two this while walking one and striking out four batters.

Josh Storm (12) picked up his 12^th save of the season, just one day after he set the single season saves record, as he tossed the final two innings and allowed one hit while striking out two batters.

The Trojans were led at the plate by Miller, who had two doubled and the three-run homer. Henry also had two hits.

The Trojans will either play Louisiana-Lafayette or Western Kentucky at 9 am to open the Sun Belt Conference Tournament next week in Lafayette. If ULL earns the six seed, the game will likely be moved to Wednesday night as the host team can choose their game time.
