| Juzil Rudolph, Heptathlon - Conference champion |
SATURDAY, MAY 10, 2008
4:21 p.m.
The finals are being set for the long jump, and it looks as O'Darien Bassett and Lamontrey Stamper will both be competing in the event, which is big for the Trojans who were expecting just 10 points out of the event. They are warming up for the event as we speak and we will see what order they will be jumping in.
4:27 p.m.
Lamontrey Stamper joins the growing list of Troy athletes to travel to the NCAA Regionals in two weeks with a jump of 7.54 meters in the long jump (third flight). He joins O'Darien Bassett in the competition in Fayetteville May 30-31. The jump should be good enough to move Stamper into the finals, alongside Bassett later this afternoon, in about 30 minutes.
4:21 p.m.
Ever wonder what a storm would do if it came through in the middle of a conference track meet, that is what we are beginning to wonder right now, although there is nothing in the sky. We are also wondering why Denton is under a watch when there are not storms in the area ... or for that matter, the state of Texas. Anyone got a guess? Anyone want to figure out where Denton is on the map, don't go to the weather website, you won't find it if you are looking for bad weather. Anyway, back to the meet.
4:17 p.m.
It is now officially a very long day, and the day is just beginning with the running events slated to start 1:43 minutes from now. However, Lamontrey Stamper is on the runway preparing for the third flight of the long jump. And after watching the heptathlon and decathlon over the last two days, let's just say, those athletes deserve any accolade that comes their way for the grueling circumstances they are put under in the events.
4:10 p.m.
The final results are in and Mike Conley narrowly missed out on a medal in the decathlon. Conley finished fourth overall with a total of 6,533 points - 200 points shy of third place. Meanwhile, Leander McKenzie finished seventh with 6,114 points. Between the duo, they picked up seven more points for the Trojans six heading into the meet.
4:02 p.m.
The last event of the decathlon just completed and Mike Conley finished fourth in the 1,500-meters to try and improve his standing in the event. The final results will be posted momentarily.
3:48 p.m.
The first jump is in the books, and O'Darien Bassett leads the competition with a jump of 7.90 meters, just short of his school-record 7.91 meters set two weeks ago. He is in discussions now with the coaching staff trying to correct his "over-rotating on the take-off."
3:33 p.m.
The long jump competition is underway for the men and O'Darien Bassett is warming up for his flight in the competition. He will be the first participant for the Trojans, as no one was in Flight One. He is the current Sun Belt leader and the defending champion in the event, but faces a field that wants to dethrone him this season. His season-long is 7.91 meters set two weeks ago.
3:27 p.m.
The javelin is completed for the decathlon, leaving just one event left in the multi-event for the men. Mike Conley took home first place in the javelin with a throw of 53.29 meters (174'10"). Meanwhile, Leander McKenzie finished seventh with a distance of 42.48 meters (139'4"). The standings heading into the last event are jumbled with Conley in fourth place with 5,991 points and McKenzie in seventh place with 5,644 points. The leader from Arkansas State, BJ Parish has distanced himself from the rest of the field with 6,648 points. Meanwhile, Conley trails third place, Ruslan Hemed of ULM, by just 125 points and is just 149 points from second place.
2:49 p.m.
The official results are in and Porsche Holden finished with a jump of 5.81 meters (19' 3/4"), a new PR for the freshman. It is also the second longest jump this season for the Trojans. Here are the standings after women's long jump:
COMPLETE STANDINGS (through long jump)
- Troy - 34
- Western Kentucky - 34
- Middle Tennessee - 28
- North Texas - 27
- Arkansas State - 22
- Florida International - 20
- South Alabama - 15
- Louisiana-Monroe - 12
- Florida Atlantic - 3
2:43 p.m.
The official results will be posted momentarily, but Porsche Holden finished fifth for the Trojans in the long jump to score more points on the women's side.
2:36 p.m.
The pole vault is complete and the results are in ... with two events remaining, Mike Conley and Leander McKenzie look poised to score points for the men's track and field team, as they are in fifth and seventh place respectively. With a jump of 4.15 meters, Conley earned 659 points and is beginning his push to the top three. He currently stands at 5,354 points and is just 184 points back from second place. Meanwhile, McKenzie is in seventh place after earning 549 points in the pole vault. He has accumulated 5,166 points and is 372 points back of second place. All that is left is the javelin and the 1,500-meter run.
2:02 p.m.
It is official, we are now witnessing a VERY LONG decathlon this weekend. With four hours remaining before the first running event of the outdoor championships, the men are just now done with the pole vault - awaiting results - and still have two events remaining.
1:52 p.m.
The finals are set for the long jump and it looks as though Porsche Holden made it through to the finals and will jump fifth in the order. The jumpers are beginning their run-through and if you are watching via the Sun Belt, Holden will be easy to spot with the orange-colored hair she is donning for the weekend.
1:25 p.m.
Sorry for the delay in information being delivered ... there are no results from the decathlon (which they are stiiiiiiillllllll doing the pole vault) or the long jump for the women - who are beginning the third flight.
12:45 p.m.
Juzil Rudolph scratched on her first and second attempts on the long jump - leaving her one more jump in the opening round, while Leander McKenzie set a new PR in the pole vault (decathlon). Mike Conley is still on the ramp in the decathlon for the Trojans, while Porsche Holden, Agata Cichoszewska and Chontia Allen are all on the waiting list for the long jump. Here are your standings after the second third scored event of the championships on the women's side.
STANDINGS AFTER THREE EVENTS
- Western Kentucky - 34
- Troy - 30
- North Texas - 24
- Arkansas State - 20
- Middle Tennessee - 15
- Louisiana-Monroe - 11
- Florida International - 10
- South Alabama - 9
- Florida Atlantic - 3
12:28 p.m.
Bad news for Rudolph, she has to compete in the long jump competition's first flight in about two minutes.
12:27 p.m.
And the winner is .... drumroll, please ... Troy's Juzil Rudolph. The senior from Montgomery captured the conference championship in the Heptathlon with a sixth-place finish in the 800-meter run. The time was good enough to earn 536 points, and ironically the two competitors right behind her in the event were teammates Erin Clymer and Chontia Allen. This is the second consecutive season that Rudolph has earned the conference championship, and the second consecutive season that Western Kentucky's Jessica Delauney finished second. With her finish in the 800-meters, Clymer was able to score a point for the Trojans as well. COMPLETE RESULTS
12:00 noon
Ironically, Juzil Rudolph only needs 674 points to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Mideast Regionals, which in my estimation is an eighth place finish in the event. And the event is about to begin, will let you know how the finish - hopefully getting a picture of the conference champion in a few minutes.
11:55 a.m.
With one event remaining Juzil Rudolph
leads the Heptathlon with a total of 4,376 points. She leads Jessica
Delaunay of Western Kentucky with 3,994 points, Dominique McAdoo of
Louisiana-Monroe with 3,935 points and Alysha Adams of North Texas with
3,928 points. The point difference for the event is 382 points, which
means Rudolph needs to finish at least 10th in the 800-meters, by my
calculations (WHICH I AM NOT CLAIMING TO BE A MATH MAJOR, SO HOPEFULLY
I AM RIGHT) to win the Sun Belt Conference Championship in the event.
Meanwhile, Erin Clymer currently stands at ninth place and needs a strong showing in the 800-meters to score points for the Trojans in the event.
11:47 a.m.
After arriving at track expecting to see a packed house due to the parking situation and the lots being full, walking into the stadium you get the shock of your life. The only people watching are parents, coaches and other athletes -- the reason the parking lot is full is because of graduation at the Super Pit. Speaking of graduation, the Trojans had numerous athletes and workers in the athletic department graduate this weekend - so congratulations to them as well. On another note about being packed, the leader board on both the decathlon and heptathlon are packed. Leander McKenzie, sporting the mohawk look today, just cleared the opening height for the pole vault and will move to the next height, while Juzil Rudolph is awaiting the overall point total to know what she has to do in the 800-meters to capture the Sun Belt Conference Championship.
11:33 a.m.
Awaiting the results of the javelin competition on the Heptathlon, with Juzil Rudolph still leading the event. The 800-meters, the last event of the Hepatathlon, has been announced as beginning at 12 noon. Meanwhile, Porsche Holden and Agata Cichoszewska are preparing to warm-up for their first appearance in the championships in the long jump.
11:23 a.m.

10:59 a.m.
The big news on the day is the withdrawal of Arkansas State's Matt Vining from the Decathlon, the defending champion in the event. Meanwhile, Leander McKenzie narrowly missed his school record time in the 110-meter hurdles, running a time of 14.02 seconds to record 972 total points; while Mike Conley started his move up the leader board for the Trojans. After seven events, Conley is currently fifth with 4,695 points and McKenzie sixth with 4,617 points. They are both chasing the leader, BJ Parish from Arkansas State, who leads with 5,289 points. They are both less then 250 points away from third place and medaling in the event. The men are preparing for the pole vault, with the javelin and 1,500-meter run remaining on the schedule.
10:55 a.m.
Waiting on the official completed results, but after five events, Troy's Juzil Rudolph continues to lead the Heptathlon with 3,808 points - a lead of 220 points over the closest competitor -- with two events remaining. The women are preparing to throw the javelin right now, while also having the final event - the 800 meters right around the corner. Meanwhile, Erin Clymer and Chontia Allen are 8th and 11th respectively. Rudolph was able to extend her lead in the event with a first place finish in the long jump, recording a distance of 5.67 meters for a total of 750 points.

8:29 a.m.
The second day of the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships is about to be underway at Fouts Field in the lovely city of Denton, Texas - for all of you NFL fans, the home of "Mean" Joe Green. Those of you who are trying to figure out who he is, remember back to the Coca-Cola commercial where the football players takes his jersey and gives it to the kid in the walkway of the stadium - that is Greene.
Anyway, back to the meet after my tangent this morning. The weather currently is 68 degrees and cloudy, but the bad news is that the clouds will burn off later and get up to 90 degrees (probably closer to 105 degrees or so on the track).
The events get kicked off this morning with the Decathlon at 9 a.m. and the Heptathlon at 9:30 a.m. and run through the last event starting at 9:25 this evening.
We will update the events that will be beginning within an hour of the start, beginning with the multi-events in which the Trojans have three participants (including the current leader) and the Decathlon in which they have two participants.

The average time for the race is around 42 minutes, so expect results to be posted by around 9:50 and around 10:45 this evening for the two races. The rest of the athletes are on their way back to the hotel .... in Fort Worth ... to get their rest for the long day tomorrow. Especially the multi-event athletes who leave before the sun comes up in the beautiful state of Texas.
8:45 p.m.
The pole vault results are in and senior Karla Blankenship narrowly missed scoring for the Trojans, finishing ninth overall with a distance of 3.25 meters. She finished behind Kelly Delka of North Texas in the ninth spot to miss out on the point.

5:08 p.m.

Even though it has been a long day, the Trojans are making strides as Michael Martin achieved a PR in the the discus, competing against the top two throwers in the conference lined up in his heat.
5:05 p.m.
Waiting on the official results to be posted for the women's discus, but the preliminary results indicate the Trojans finished second, third and fourth -- with all three throwers scoring points. Meanwhile, the men on the board with Ryan Schmeling and Michael Martin participating in the men's discus right now. Senior Karla Blankenship is warming up for the pole vault which begins in over an hour, followed by the 10,000-meters for both the men and women beginning at nine o'clock this evening.
3:30 p.m.
After a phone call with throws coach Michael Heck, none of the throwers had an "outstanding throw" but they are all in the finals, which is good for the Trojans from a standpoint of scoring points on the first day. Heck also pointed out before the event that "all three throwers have the potential to go top three", which would five the Trojans 27 point out of one event on the first day of the event. Stay tuned, as the finalists are taking their warm-up throws for the finals, which will begin shortly. Heading into the finals, the competitors for the Trojans are as follows: Baker (5th) 41.27 meters, Jordan (1st) 45.98 meters and Howell (8th) 40.22 meters.
3:00 p.m.
Defending Sun Belt Conference champion, Tiphanie Baker, is warming up for the third flight of the discus competition. A regional qualifier all ready this season, she will be attempting to join Monique Jordan in the finals. Jordan, almost assured of a spot in the finals with a distance of 45.98 meters, won the second flight. Meanwhile, Shenita Howell won the first flight with a throw just over 40 meters and is awaiting the results of flight three to see if she has gained entry into the finals of the discus competition.
