TROY - On Saturday April 12th the Troy Soccer team hosted an event for Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Alabama. With the help of the Volleyball team, the event was a huge success.
“This is a new activity that really gave a chance for the Little Brothers and Sisters to engage in physical activity and meet new people,” Big Brothers Big Sisters Activities Coordinator Melinda Conner said. “We hope that the Soccer Team will host us again in the near future.”
Little Brothers and Sisters (ages 6-16) were able to participate in a variety of games such as dodgeball, wiffleball, 4-Square, volleyball and soccer.
“It was great to see our Student-Athletes getting involved in the community,” Head Women's Soccer Coach Chris Bentley said.
“Nicole Targa (Soccer's Philanthropy Chair) worked hard to put on a great event and I am extremely proud of these young women - more importantly they are proud of themselves.”
The Big Brothers Big Sisters Mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with mentors that have a measurable impact on youth. National research has shown that positive relationships between youth and their Big Brothers and Big Sisters mentors have a direct and measurable impact on children's lives. By participating in our youth mentoring programs, Little Brothers and Sisters are:
- More confident in their schoolwork performance
- Able to get along better with their families
- 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
- 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
- 52% less likely to skip school.
“Big Brothers Big Sisters is always looking for new volunteers.” Conner stated, “Volunteers come from the community, but most of our volunteer's are students here at
