Trojans Defeat ISU In Last Match Of Day

MOBILE, Ala. - The Troy University Trojans match went down to the last singles match on the court, with the Trojans prevailing over Indiana State 4-3.
After the two teams battled to 3-all tie after the first six matches, the Trojans turned to Stephanie Vieria to attempt to clinch the match at number four singles. Vieria won the opening set 6-3, but dropped the second set 7-5 and setting the stage for an epic third set to decide a victor. Vieria was able to win the third set and eventually claim a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 victory over Indiana State's Fadzai Masiyazi to clinch the 4-3 victory for Troy (5-7).
The day started off well for the Trojans against Indiana State, playing their first outdoor match of the season, as they claimed the doubles point by winning two of the three doubles matches. The team of Vieria and Caroline Jounia was the first team to claim victory for the Trojans, defeating the Indiana State team ofFadzai Masiyazi and Sarah Meghoufel 8-4. The point was clinched when the number two doubles team of Mirte De Bakker and Leonie Guijt defeated Indiana State's Valeria Petrovych and Marie Caujolle 8-4. The number one doubles team for the Trojans fell 8-6 after the point had been decided.
The overall match was quickly tied at 1-all when Petrovych defeated Troy's Jounia 6-4, 6-2 at number five; however, the Trojans took the lead back when Guijt defeated Caujolle in straight sets; 6-2, 7-6; to claim a victory at number six singles.
The Trojans took a 3-1 overall lead when De Bakker claimed a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Joanne Schickerling at number three; but watched as the Sycamores claimed victories at number one and number two singles to tie the match at 3-all and set the stage for the final match of the day at number four singles.
Troy returns to action Saturday, March 15 at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tennessee.
