MURFREESBORO, Tenn.
? Day one of the 2008 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track and Field
Championships didn't disappoint as teams from around the conference
competed at the highest level of competition. In
the men's competition Middle Tennessee leads after the first day with
41 points and on the women's side WKU finished the day in first place
with 55 points.
In
the women's competition, Middle Tennessee's distance medley relay team
of Ashley Comstock, Antranette Stringer, Marjorie Gombert and ZamZam
Sangau set a new Sun Belt Conference record and a new Sun Belt
Conference Championship record. The Blue Raider team had a substantial lead throughout much of the race and finished with a time of 12:07.87.
In the women's 3000 meters WKU's Janet Jesang took top honors clocking a time of 9:48.03.
In women's field events ULM's
Heather Davis set a new personal best and provisionally qualified for
the NCAA in the high jump winning the event with a jump of 1.78. Florida
International's Kerry Walker also set a NCAA provisional mark in the
long jump leaping 6.23 meters to capture first place.
In the shot put Florida International's Joanne Jadotte finished first with a throw of 14.25. Shelley Hollingsworth from North Texas took first place in the pole vault finishing the event with a 3.6 meter jump. The pole vault was heavily contested as Hollingsworth and Arkansas State's Erica Naeger battled for ten jumps before Hollingsworth finally claimed the crown. WKU
took first and second place in the pentathlon with Heather Hammond
finishing first and teammate Jessica Delaunay finishing second. Hammond and Delaunay finished with 3563 points and 3456 points respectively.
In
the men's competition Florida International's Adam Cole took home top
honors in the high jump finishing with a jump of 2.04 meters. WKU's
Matt Taitt also excelled in the first day of competition and added to
his list of conference titles as he finished first in the shot put with
a throw of 16.64. In the long jump brothers Carl and Carlos Morgan finished first and second respectively with jumps of 7.57 meters. Carl took first place in the event because of previous better jump. Arkansas State's B.J. Parish currently leads the heptahlon with 2928 points through four events.
In the last event of the day, the men's distance medley relay, South Alabama's
team of Antipah Sugut, Florent Joulain, Onesumus Too and Micah Tirop
edged UALR by one tenth of a second to take home first place. The Jaguars finished with a time of 10:12.30 to UALR's 10:12.31. In the men's 3000 meters South Alabama's Micah Tirop finished with a time of 8:18.83 to claim first.
The 2008 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships conclude tomorrow in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The
action begins at 8 a.m. with the 55 meter hurdles for the heptahlon and
ends with the final event at 5:50 of the championships, the women's and
men's one mile relay.
