TROY, Ala. ? Troy pushed North Texas into overtime on Senior Day, but the Mean Green converted their second penalty kick of the match to defeat the Trojans 2-1 in Sun Belt soccer action.
The Trojans put on a great show in honor of their four seniors with all four being recognized prior to the contest, but the Mean Green's Kelli Lunsford scored on both of her penalty kicks, one in the first half and one in overtime to give her squad the victory.
“I think when you lose a game on two penalty kicks it is tough to say it's a good loss, but we are making strides to get better. Our best soccer is ahead of us. Both teams fought hard and give credit to North Texas because they were able to pull through,” head coach Chris Bentley said.
Troy (6-7-2) answered back following North Texas' first half score with a goal of their own off a set piece. Bridget Duke struck the ball past the diving Mandy Hall to tie things at one with less than ten minutes remaining before halftime.
“Bridget got a great strike on the ball. She's been a bit unlucky with those in the past, but she came through today,” Bentley said.
With things tied at one, both teams came out with physical efforts in the second half, with three yellow cards being issued. Lindsey Lackore and Lunsford earned cautions for North Texas, while Stephanie Haley picked one up for Troy.
For match North Texas (10-2-1) held the shot advantage at a 15-to-6 rate. Troy edged the Mean Green in fouls at 17-to-11.
The match was Troy's final home contest for 2008. Next, the Trojans will make the Sun Belt's Florida swing when they face Florida Atlantic on Friday and then Florida International on Sunday. For more information check TroyTrojans.com
