TROY, Ala. - Troy used a 21-2 run in the first five minutes of the second half to push it's advantage to 26, and the Trojans never looked back in a 92-71 win over Louisiana Monroe.
“That explosion was the best one I have seen in a long time,” head coach Don Maestri said. “I was really happy with our guy's effort tonight because they really wanted to win.
“We have had some poor performances and some unlucky ones over the past month and this win will hopefully help us down the final stretch.”
The Trojans (10-11, 3-7) came out of the locker room to start the second half like a team possessed.
Troy scored 11 points in the first 57 seconds of the half. In the first 4:29, the Trojans went on a 21-2 run jumping out to a 69-43 lead.
Senior Jarvis Acker started the half with a steal and a three. Sophomore Michael Vogler stole the inbound pass and dished it to senior Justin Jonus for a three.
On Troy's next possession, Acker added another three giving the Trojans nine points in the first 40 seconds of the second half.
Senior O'Darien Bassett made both free throws after being fouled on a lay-up attempt and Acker hit a jumper, followed by a Jonus three pointer.
ULM (8-13, 2-7) got its first points of the second half on a dunk from Raphelle Turner at the 17:00 mark.
Vogler and Jonus both added a pair of free throws for Troy, increasing the lead to 68-43
Junior Kenny Ware added a lay-up during the run with Jerome Odem and Jonus each hitting a three pointer.
The first half saw the Warhawks race out to an early eight point lead at 17-9 with 15:44 left in the opening period. However, the lead was short-lived as the Trojans pecked away.
Troy rallied behind a lay-up from sophomore Trayce Macon followed by tip-in from Jonus. Sophomore Brandon Hazzard added a three, cutting the ULM lead to 17-16
Troy took a 28-25 lead at the 8:28 mark off of a three from Odem.
The two teams battled shot-for-shot for the rest of the half until the final minute when Bassett hit a pair of free throws and Macon hit a three at the buzzer, sending the Trojans into the locker room with the 48-41 advantage.
Of the nine three pointers ULM hit, seven were made in front of the Trojan bench. The first half also saw 11 lead changes.
The Trojans had five players in double figures with Jonus leading the way with 19 points. Macon chipped in 13 with Bassett and Acker added 10 each.
