Trojans Fall at Home in Final Seconds

TROY, Ala. - Shannon Lloyd's lay-up with just 1.6 seconds to play gave the University of Louisiana-Monroe a 51-49 victory over the Troy University Trojans at Trojan Arena on a stormy Thursday night.
After Audrey Muse tied the game up for the Trojans with 45 seconds remaining in the contest, the Warhawks came down the floor with one intention, feed the ball inside to Lloyd. Following a missed shot and an offensive rebounds, the Warhawks called a timeout to set the final play up for Lloyd. She grabbed the pass and went over Muse for the lay-up that skirted the rim on the way in.
“It was a disappointing loss,” Troy head coach Michael Murphy said. “We had plenty of opportunities in the second half.”
Troy built a lead of six early in the second half, only to see ULM whittle that lead down and eventually take a 31-30 lead with 10:59 to play.
As the Warhawks built their lead to five, the Trojans fought back from the 43-38 deficit with under seven minutes to play. Troy was able to take a 44-43 lead on a Laura Lee Holman three-pointer with 6:09 remaining in the game. The two teams traded baskets until the final points by Lloyd.
“We didn't give up,” Lewis said. “That is a credit to the team. We did start the game very badly with the turnovers, but we were able to come back and take the lead. We still have things to work on, like the rebounding. We still have some games left that can help us, we just need to do it.”
The Trojans trailed for the majority of the first half until a jumper by Kylie Morrissy handed Troy a 13-12 lead with just 6:49 remaining in the half. The lead was extended to 14-12 when Muse connected on the front end of a two shot foul with 5:21 remaining in the half. After Louisiana-Monroe tied the game at 14-14, the Trojans took a two-point lead on a Muse lay-up with 4:51 left to play in the opening stanza.
The Warhawks took a two-point lead, 18-16, when LaJeanna Howard connected on a jumper with 3:04 remaining in the half and Lloyd hit a lay-up with 2:03 remaining in the half.
Troy tied the game at 18-18 when Muse scored her fifth consecutive point for the Trojans, hitting a lay-up with 1:09 remaining in the half. The lead was pushed to 20-18 when Morrissy cut through the lane for a lay-up, and was pushed to the halftime advantage of four points when Amy Lewis connected on a jumper with just one second remaining before the intermission.
Troy shot 42 (21-of-50) percent from the floor and 38.5 (5-of-13) percent from behind the arc. They also shot just 33.3 (2-of-6) from the free throw line. Meanwhile, the Warhawks shot 40 (22-of-55) percent from the floor and just 20 (3-of-15) percent from behind the arc. However, they did manage to shoot 80 (4-of-5) percent from the free throw line and outrebound Troy 40-25 (16 offensive rebounds) for the game.
“You can't give up 16 offensive rebounds to anybody and expect to win the game,” Murphy said. “That was the problem tonight. We prepared our kids over the last two days and told them how athletic this team was, and how good they rebound the ball from the guard position. We just simply did not do a very good job of blocking out, and taking care of the basketball late in the game.”
Lottie Moore led ULM (13-7, 6-3 SBC) with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Howard chipped in with 11 and Lloyd 10 in the victory.
Lewis led the Trojans with 15 points and five rebounds, while Morrissy added 10 in the loss.
Troy returns to action Saturday afternoon on the road against the University of New Orleans. The game tips at 12 noon and can be heard on WTBF-94.7 FM.
