TROY, Ala. - The Troy University women's basketball ended a three-game losing streak, defeating Louisiana-Lafayette 63-54 at Trojan Arena in a key Sun Belt Conference game Sunday afternoon. It was the also the first victory for Troy (10-10, 3-6 SBC) over Louisiana-Lafayette (5-14, 1-7 SBC) in the school's history.
“The last week has been very rough,” Troy head coach Michael Murphy said. “And the last week has seemed like it has lasted a month to be quite honest. The difference between the game and the previous three has been one simple thing, and that is leadership. The leadership by upperclassmen who understand we have to have a sense of urgency.”
They did so without the services of their leading scorer, Amy Lewis, who missed the game due to an undisclosed injury. It was the first game that Lewis missed in her Trojan career, starting 104 consecutive games. However, she is expected to play against Louisiana-Monroe later this week.
“That leadership was on display tonight with Amy being out of the lineup,” Murphy said. “You take 19 points and one the top three three-point shooters in the league out of your lineup, that is a tough thing to overcome. Our players stepped up to the challenge that we set forth.”
However, they turned to another member of the school's 1,000-point list, Laura Lee Holman. The senior guard scored the team's first five baskets of the second half, all but one on three-point shots to give the Trojans a 38-35 lead with 14:09 remaining in the contest. The Trojans extended that lead to as many as seven midway through the second half.
After Louisiana-Lafayette trimmed the lead to 52-50, the Trojans turned to a trio of players to push the lead to nine with 1:38 remaining in the half. Junior Kylie Morrissy, minutes after leaving the floor after being knocked to the floor and hitting her face, drove the lane and proceeded to fake a pass while connecting on a lay-up to extend the lead to 54-50.
The next trip down the floor, Holman connected on her fifth three-pointer of the game to extend the lead to 57-50. Junior forward Danielle Realph connected on a lay-up to push the lead to nine, before Larelle Roper put the game away with under a minute to go with a three-pointer from the right corner to push the lead to 62-52.
The two teams traded baskets throughout the first half, with the largest lead for the Ragin' Cajuns reaching four and the Trojans five with 11:57 remaining in the half.
After Louisiana-Lafayette took an 8-6 lead with 13:28 remaining in the first half, the Trojans responded with a lay-up from Roper to tie the game at 8-8 with 13:14 remaining in the first half. They proceeded to score the next five points to finish off a 7-0 run that extended their lead to 13-8 with 11:57 remaining in the half.
