TROY, Ala. - The Troy University women's track and field program opens the 2008 indoor season at the Clemson Invitational this weekend, beginning early Friday and concluding on Saturday.
The Trojans will be competing in 17 different events, and will look to three athletes who qualified for the NCAA Mideast Region in the outdoor season; Tiphanie Baker, Agata Cichoszewska and Juzil Rudolph.
"We have delayed the start of our Indoor season from December until January this year," Troy Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Jill Lancaster said. "I really feel the extra training sessions have helped us. They have worked very hard, and we look forward to watching them well."
This weekend, the Trojans will take 19 different athletes to compete in the 17 indoor events; including all three returning regional performers.
Rudolph will compete in the most events over the weekend for the Trojans; competing in the 60-meter high hurdles, 60-meter dash, high jump, 200-meter run and the 4x400-meter relay. Erin Clymer (triple jump, 60-meter high hurdles and high jump), Porsche Holden (60-meter high hurdles, 200-meter run and 4x400-meter relay), Tawanna Meadows (60-meter dash, 200-meter run, 4x400-meter relay) and Jocelyn Williams (60-meter dash, 200-meter run, 4x400-meter relay) will compete in three events each.
Meanwhile, Cichoszewska (triple jump, 60-meter high hurdles), Megan Young (60-meter high hurdles, high jump), Shelisa Crawford (60-meter dash, 200-meter run), and Tatiana Thomas (400-meter dash, 4x400-meter relay) will compete in two events each.
Shea Matthews (triple jump), Karla Blakenship (pole vault), Kelly Harrington (one-mile run), Jennifer Graham (one-mile run), Shea Matthews (400-meter dash), Baker (shot put), Monique Jordan (shot put), Brentley Collins (800-meter run), Faith Hampton (800-meter run) and Jeanean Corcoran (3000-meter run) round out the competitors in this weekend's event.
"Historically we have competed well with the elite athletes who participate in the meet," Lancaster said. "I feel we can do this as well, if not better than, we have in the past. This year we have a large group of freshman with little, or no, indoor experience who will get their first taste of Division I athletics. The meet will be a great learning tool for these athletes. A new twist to the competition this year is that it is a scored meet, and we look to improve on last year and place well."
