AUBURN, Ala. -- Despite finishing with a school record of 5,049 points in the heptathlon Saturday at the Tiger Track Classic, junior Juzil Rudolph fell a single point short of provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the event. The difference proved to be as small as 0.1 seconds in the 800 meters or just one-quarter inch in the long jump.
She still finished second overall, winning the high jump and placing second in five other events. She established new personal bests in the javelin, high jump and shot put.
The first multi-event performance of the season also proved to be successful as Mike Conley racked up the second-best decathlon in school history (behind Matt VanZandt's 6,826 points last year) and bettered his personal best by 300 points. He finished third with 6,331 points, trailing only athletes from Wisconsin and Purdue.
"Conditions were cold and windy and times and distances across the board suffered," Director of Track Bob Lambert said. "We only took a limited team, but still enjoyed some success against some of the bigger track programs in the country."
Jenean Corcoran set a new school record in the steeplechase with her time of 11:52, bettering the old mark by 17 seconds. Shenita Howell had her second- and third-best javelin throws ever to finish seventh.
LaMar Hicks finished third in the 100-meter dash at 10.60 and sixth in the 200-meter dash at 21.99, while Scott Crews set a team-season-best in the pole vault at 4.60 meters (15-feet, 1-inch).Finally, Jeremy Moujoodi got a personal best in his first collegiate 5000-meter run (15:18.30).
The Trojans left a majority of their top athletes at home as the meet took place between the Coach O Invitational and one of the top meets in the Southeast, Tennessee's Sea Ray Relays. NCAA qualifiers O'Darien Bassett, Agata Cichoszewska and Tawanna Meadows are expected to invitationals to that event based on early-season performances.
Additionally, teammater Michael Heck (shot put), Ryan Schmeling (discus), Ryan Baker (hammer), Tiphanie Baker (discus), Monique Jordan (hammer, discus), Monique Johnson (hurdles), Rudolph(long jump), Lamar Hicks (100) and Matavis Madden (400) are among candidates to compete at the meet which takes place Friday and Saturday.
