TROY, Ala.- Troy University freshman Steven Felix had a chance to give the Trojans the lead over 14th ranked Coastal Carolina when he came to the plate in the seventh inning on Sunday at Riddle-Pace Field.
That opportunity turned out poorly as he grounded into an inning-ending double play.
When he got the same chance in the bottom of the ninth, he delivered a two-run double, giving Troy a second straight come from behind win over the Chanticleers, 7-6.
Felix drove home Brett Pierce and Kevin Weidlich on the first pitch he saw from Coastal Carolina closer Pete Andrelczyk (0-1).
"These are two big wins for our club," head coach Bobby Pierce said. "It was a great swing by Felix to hit the ball and hopefully we can keep building off of this win."
Troy (19-14) got on the board first in the second inning when sophomore Trevor Tyre reached on an error by the second baseman and was followed by a walk to freshman Matt Tanzi. Sophomore Beau Brooks plated two runs on a single to right field giving the Trojans an early 2-0 lead.
Coastal Carolina (28-5) was held off the board until the seventh inning when David Sapplet hit a ball deep to right for a grand slam to put the Chanticleers up 4-2.
Senior Clegg Snipes started on the mound for the Trojans going seven innings and giving up four runs on seven hits. He had a career-high 12 strikeouts on the day. The runs came on the grand slam.
"I was glad to see Clegg come back and pitch a great game today," Pierce said. "He needed this outing and I am very proud of him."
Senior closer Josh Dew (5-0) came on in the eighth inning and gave up a two-run homer to Tommy Baldridge to put Coastal Carolina back on top 6-4.
The Trojans were led at the plate by Weidlich, who had three doubles and two RBI. Brooks also had three hits with a home run and a total of three RBI. Junior Bryan Miller also added two hits.
Troy will be back in action as they play host to Samford Tuesday night at Riddle-Pace Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
