MONROE, La. -- O'Darien Bassett continued his masterful transition from basketball to track Saturday, setting new school records in the long jump and triple jump at the ULM Warhawk Classic. His long jump of 7.88 meters (25-feet, 10.25-inches) was the best in the nation heading into the Saturday's action.
Bassett, in just his second collegiate meet since high school, topped the school long jump standard of 25-feet, 4.75-inches set by Mike Acree in 2005. He previously set the Colley Track record at the Coach O Invitational in March.Saturday's mark of 15.70 meters (51-feet, 6.5-inches) in the triple jump bested Bernard Amber's leap of 50-feet, 11 inches back in 1977.
Ryan Baker broke the school mark in the hammer throw with a toss of 53.03 meters (173-feet, 11-inches) topped his own mark from two weeks ago, while Maggie Beck's mark of 10-feet, 6-inches in the pole vault was 5.5 inches higher than Michelle Thompson's standard from 2003.
In addition to Bassett and Baker winning their events with new records, six other Trojans took event wins. Troy dominated the field events with first-place finishes by Tiphanie Baker in the women's discus (46.59 meters/152-feet, 10-inches), Wes Jackson in the men's high jump (1.93 meters/6-feet, 4-inches)., Scott Crews in the men's pole vault (4.55 meters/14-feet, 11-inches) and Norman Austin in the men's javelin (58.60 meters/192-feet, 3-inches).
In track events, Tawanna Meadows won the women's 100-meter dash with a time of 11.78, while Monique Johnson won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.16 seconds.
Troy will take a select team to the Florida State Twilight meet on Friday in preparation for the Sun Belt Conference Championships May 11-13.
